The USS Antares was an Antares-type Federation starship operated by Starfleet during the 32nd century. The ship's technology dated back to the Burn a century earlier.
In 3191, under the command of Captain Rayner, the Antares caught Moll and L'ak's ship in a tractor beam as it fled at warp. The ship's warp bubble began to destabilize under the strain; if it collapsed, the ship would be ripped apart and the Antares would be destroyed as well. At Captain Michael Burnham's urging, Rayner released the ship.
The Antares subsequently joined the USS Discovery in another attempt to apprehend Moll and L'ak at Q'mau. Rayner ordered the Antares to collapse the mouth to a mountain tunnel from orbit so as to prevent the targets from entering. However, this inspired Moll and L'ak to trigger an avalanche as a diversion for their escape. To save a nearby settlement, the Antares and the Discovery descended to the surface and blocked the avalanche with their merged deflector shields. (DIS: "Red Directive")
In the diplomatic furor that followed the Q'mau incident, Rayner was compelled to take early retirement by Fleet Admiral Charles Vance. The Antares remained near Federation Headquarters. (DIS: "Under the Twin Moons")
