L'ak was a male Breen courier who lived during the late 32nd century. A descendant of the last Breen Emperor, L'ak was considered to have royal blood, with his uncle, Primarch Ruhn, planning to use him to ascend to the throne. L'ak was working as an inspector in the shuttle bay when he first met Mall who was working as a courier. The two formed a romantic bond and Mall asked him to run away with her. L'ak showed her his true face which was forbidden. His uncle and others discovered the relationship and tried to kill them both as punishment. L'ak killed one guard and wounded his uncle. As a result, a blood bounty was placed on them both and they ran away. They began working as couriers and got married at some point during their travels. Eventually, they began searching for the progenitors technology intending to trade it for the removal of the bounty on them.

After being cornered by his uncle, L'ak hacked a biobed and injected himself with a massive dose of tricordrazine, resulting in an accidental overdose that neither Dr. Hugh Culber nor a Breen medic could save him from. However, the Federation discovered from Doctor Vellek's diary that the Progenitor technology may be capable of resurrection, meaning that Moll likely intended to use it to bring him back after she found it. (DIS: "Red Directive", "Mirrors", "Erigah")

In order to preserve L'ak's body until the Progenitors' technology could be found, Moll stored him in a portable pattern buffer. (DIS: "Lagrange Point")

After Burnham accessed the technology and encountered a Progenitor, she asked about the possibility of using the technology to restore life. However, the Progenitor revealed that while the technology could create a genetically identical being, it would share none of the memories or fundamental essence of the original person. Burnham sadly told Moll that they couldn't bring L'ak back and transferred his body back into the pattern buffer before they beamed to a shuttle outside of the portal. (DIS: "Life, Itself")
