The Odyssey class was a class of Federation starship that had entered service by the late 24th century. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

History[]

The Odyssey-class was in service by 2401, with at least twelve ships having been completed, and with at least one starship, the USS Enterprise-F, scheduled for an early decommissioning in that same year. (PIC: "The Next Generation", "Vox")

The Enterprise-F and twelve of her sister ships were in attendance at the ill-fated 250th Frontier Day of 2401, where all fell victim to Borg assimilation. At least three were left wrecked but relatively intact in Earth orbit following the attack on Sol Station, following the fleet's liberation. (PIC: "Võx", "The Last Generation")

The main bridge was located on Deck 1, and maintained a traditional layout, with the helm and operations stations at the front of the ship, and the captain's chair in the middle. (PIC: "Vox")

Command and control systems[]

By 2401, the computer systems on board the class had been built to include the Fleet formation mode, also known as Starfleet emergency protocol NX12.11, designed to place all Federation starships within a fleet under the automated control of the Starfleet mainframe. (PIC: "Võx")

Background information[]

According to the Star Trek: Picard Logs, the Enterprise-F was an Odyssey-class starship. [1] The audio descriptions for the episode "Võx" also referred to it this way, and it was Production Designer Dave Blass who confirmed the class designation when he posted official promotional production art on his twitter account, formally introducing the Enterprise-F as such in (live-action) canon. [2]

According to production art, the class has a mass of 6,622,050 metric tons, a length of 1,061.1 meters, a beam of 371.88 meters, and a height of 147.92 meters. It has an operational crew of 1,600 personnel. The Odyssey class also is equipped with nineteen mark-XII phaser arrays, four variable torpedo launchers, two phaser cannon turrets, and two heavy phaser cannon mounts. [3]

The total number of Odyssey-class vessels present at Frontier Day was established by former Picard Research Assistant Jörg Hillebrand. [4]

The Odyssey-class Enterprise-F made her then-still apocryphal debut in the Star Trek Online computer game in 2012, eleven years before her first on-screen canon appearance. The ship's design originated in a 2011 fan contest to design the next Enterprise. [5] The winning entry of this contest was created by Adam Ihle. Before its inclusion in the game, several alterations were made to the original design. Additionally, Online mainstay Thomas Marrone overhauled the ship's in-game visuals several times over the years, aided by game staffers Adam Williams and Jeremy Mattson – as indicated on the promo art featured on the right. Since 2018, the Enterprise-F has appeared in-game as a refitted Yorktown-[sub]class (β) vessel, showcasing an updated look of the Odyssey-class.

It was Marrone who became responsible for the design's translation into a CGI model for use in the game, as well as several visual updates that made the in-game version more detailed. Game developer Cryptic Studios provided their digital model files to the franchise's own visual effects (VFX) department of Star Trek: Picard, where the additional necessary changes were made under the auspices of VFX Supervisor Jason Zimmerman and VFX Production Manager Shawn Ewashko to make the ship screen-ready. [6]

The Enterprise-F was one of several ship designs that transited from the apocryphal Star Trek Online computer game to a canon live-action series alongside the Ross-class, Sutherland-class, Gagarin-class, Reliant-class (PIC: "The Star Gazer", "Farewell") as well as the Pathfinder-class and the Pioneer-class (PIC: "The Next Generation").

Before her appearance on Picard, the Enterprise-F was already showcased in a number of other licensed, yet still apocryphal, materials besides the Star Trek Online game, which included the three variant display models built for the Eaglemoss Collections partwork publications, the 2022 Ships of the Line calendar (featuring Marrone's CGI build), and the Star Trek Adventures role playing game (RPG) source books from Modiphius Entertainment.

The Eaglemoss manifestations concerned firstly the March 2019 outing in their Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection as Bonus Issue 13. Two variants of the display model were released on that occasion, one in the in-game livery as utilized in Star Trek Online, and one in what the editors of the Collection imagined to be the in-universe "Federation livery" had the ship already made a canon onscreen appearance at the time. Ironically, it was not their imagined livery which was actually seen onscreen in the Picard episodes and trailers, but rather the game livery, conceivably as a courtesy to Cryptic Studios for their assistance in providing the Starfleet vessels for use in the series. Eaglemoss mainstay Fabio Passaro converted Marrone's CGI model into a LightWave 3D version, Eaglemoss' software package of choice, needed for both the display model construction CAD files, as well as for print representation purposes in the partwork's accompanying magazine.

In 2021, a third model version was produced, this time as part of Eaglemoss' Star Trek Online Starships Collection. This model used Marrone's 2018 refit design, dubbed a "Yorktown-class" in Star Trek: Online as above-mentioned, featuring a variant in-game livery. Star Trek: Picard went with the original (Odyssey-class) in-game variant.

Apocrypha[]

USS Verity

The USS Verity was commanded by Admiral Jean-Luc Picard from 2381 to 2385.

The USS Verity (β), featured in the novel The Last Best Hope and the comic book series Star Trek: Picard - Countdown, was depicted as an Odyssey-class vessel, with the registry NCC-97001. Admiral Picard took command of the ship to oversee the evacuation efforts in Romulan space in the early 2380s, with Raffaela Musiker as his first officer.

According to the background information presented in Star Trek Picard - Countdown, the Verity and the Odyssey were built in tandem with the Odyssey being the prototype for a new class of starship and the Verity being a sister ship. Construction began on the Odyssey first, with the keel on the Verity being laid a few months later.

Then in 2381, the Romulans asked for help as their scientists discovered a supernova was imminent, and it would threaten Romulus, Remus, and dozen of other worlds. After a fierce debate, the Federation decided to create a rescue plan, This ambitious plan called for hundreds o new ships and an entirely new infrastructure incorporating synthetic labor. Tapped to lead it was Jean-Luc Picard, now promoted to Admiral.

The ambitious plan meant a major shift at the construction priorities at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Advanced Starship Design Beureau engineers evaluated both Odyssey-class ships to determine how they might serve the rescue effort. Their massive internal volume, large powerplan, and fleet of auxiliary craft made them ideal candidates to lead the mission as its flagship. The USS Odyssey was further along in its construction and most of its internal compartments and power systems were already laid down. Comparatively, the Verity was not as far along, meaning there was still time to adjust her design to accomodate the specific needs of the new rescue plan.

The admiralty decided to halt all production on the Odyssey and shift the staffing and material resources over to the Verity project, implementing several changes to the base design that increased passenger space, engine endurance, and communications capabilities. With a breakneck construction and testing program, the Verity was launched by the end of 2381 under the command of Admiral Picard.

The Odyssey was transferred to a "boneyard" in Jupiter orbit to make room for rescue ship construction.

In Star Trek Online, the Verity was refitted as a Verity-class starship by 2411, an Odyssey-class sub-variant that more closely resembles the original design by Adam Ihle.
