History[]

The ancient Nausicaans were present on Krulmuth-B and left glyphs on the portal reading "this is a time portal".

In 2259, the USS Enterprise detected activity at the portal while transporting tritriticale grain to Setlik II. They arrived at Krulmuth-B to find Ensign Brad Boimler of the USS Cerritos, who had been pulled through from 2381 when the portal was accidentally activated by the radioisotopes from a holo-camera. Concurrently, the Orion science vessel D'Var also arrived at the planet; after a terse exchange between Captains Christopher Pike and Harr Caras, the Orions seized the portal and fled.

With Boimler's assistance, the Enterprise tracked down the D'Var and traded its cargo of tritriticale for the portal. However, before Boimler could use it to return to the future, Ensign Beckett Mariner also traveled through it in an attempt to save him. This exhausted the portal's existing supply of horonium, though the Enterprise crew were able to extract more from a component of the Enterprise NX-01 that had been built into the ship.

Upon returning to the surface, the Enterprise team encountered Caras and his landing party. Boimler and Mariner appealed to Caras by noting that, in their time, Orions would be known for more than piracy, and that they served with the great-granddaughter of one of his crew members. Pike proposed that the Orions could receive credit for discovering the portal in exchange for their access. Caras agreed, allowing Boimler and Mariner to return to 2381 without incident.

In the ensuing 120 years until the Cerritos' visit, no further activity was recorded from the portal. The Cerritos' mission at the portal was simply to take routine sensor readings and check for problems. (SNW: "Those Old Scientists")
