"All I know is what the captain tells me. And he says he'll have the hide of the first man that so much as smiles."
– Dickerson, 2269 ("The Savage Curtain")

Lieutenant Dickerson was a male Human Starfleet officer who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served in the operations division aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk, during a historic five-year mission that starship undertook. He served as the ship's chief security guard in 2269.

That year, Dickerson led the honor guard detachment to the transporter room to announce the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, after Lincoln was discovered by the USS Enterprise near the planet Excalbia. Dickerson readied his phaser team and ordered them to "set for heavy stun" prior to Lincoln's transport, then blew his boatswain's whistle to announce the arrival of Lincoln, once transport was completed. (TOS: "The Savage Curtain")

Background information[]

Dickerson was played by actor Arell Blanton.

In the script, where this character was instead named "Dickenson", he had "white 'honor guard' belt and boots, holds a traditional bos'n's whistle on gold chain." In the filmed version, he wears the white belt, along with a white lanyard and black boots. The script also indicated that, during his exchange with Montgomery Scott, he was "obviously uncomfortable about the whole thing."

Dickerson appeared to be among the highest echelons of security officers aboard the Enterprise at that time, described in the end credits as the "chief security guard" and in the script as the "security chief".

Though Dickerson wore a Starfleet dress uniform reused from a previous episode, where the decorations and braid at the collar represented a lieutenant commander, Dickerson was only ever addressed as a "lieutenant", rather than a "commander". (It should be noted, however, that some lieutenant commanders, such as Shelby and Deanna Troi, have occasionally been addressed as "lieutenant".) Based on indicators to the contrary, in ultimately clipped words from the script, Dickerson addressed Lieutenant Commander Scott as "sir".
