James "Rhodey" Rhodes, also known as War Machine and the Iron Patriot, is a fictional character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Originally, he was portrayed by Terrence Howard, but replaced thereafter by Don Cheadle.
Rhodes is an lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, who served as a liaison between the Air Force and Stark Industries. He later operated the War Machine armour (temporarily known as the Iron Patriot).[1] He was a later member of the Avengers.[2] In Captain America: Civil War, the United Nations initiated the Sokovia Accords, which caused a rift between the members, with some choosing against with Steve Rogers (Captain America), while others like Rhodes elected to sign up with Tony Stark (Iron Man). When a fight between the two factions broke out to contain Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), Rhodes was accidentally crippled. Stark then helped him recover, by giving him exoskeletal leg braces.
