Jiu Jitsu or any martial art is a challenge. Okay, it’s hard. On most days, I’m just so mentally drained that I’m too exhausted to train. At the gym, there are rounds I’ll avoid because I hate getting crushed by that certain person. Not to mention the anxiety and nerves when I compete. While these things are a harsh reality, they’re also what makes it so amazing. Without struggle, there can be no success. This past Saturday wasn’t a challenge, I wasn’t drained, and I wasn’t nervous.  But I wasn’t confident, and I performed horribly, struggled at takedowns, and was mounted easily. With my daughters cheering in the background, “Go, Mommy!”, I was choked and submitted. This loss forced me to look at my training or lack of, more honestly. It exposed my weaknesses and it displayed what I don’t do well so I can improve.Those suffering every day from cancer and other illnesses don’t have the ability to even move forward or “bounce back”. So despite my defeat, my daughters and I are honored to have fundraised and participated on the mats in Tap Cancer Out. Last year, my family and I competed in a “push-up” challenge, fundraising for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I think our arms are still sore from it. This summer, my daughters and I will unlock our inner warriors. We will be competing in our very first Jiu Jitsu competition and fighting for those who are in the biggest fight of their lives. Tap Cancer Out is a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for cancer fighting research organizations through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundraising tournaments and donations.  Jiu Jitsu isn't just about physical skills; it's about building an unbreakable mindset that bleeds into every area of your life. From setting boundaries to trusting your instincts, you learn to own and claim your space and your power. The best part about training together as a family (with the coaching provided by my husband) is that we’ll be on each others’ team, and no matter what, have each others’ backs, and continue to motivate and empower each other.  What better way to do that than by coming together and doing what we can to help make a difference.  I'll admit, I'm a little intimidated as I could be competing against someone with more experience and fifteen years younger than me. But these fears and challenges are nothing compared to what most people with illnesses experience every day. #TapCancerOut #Empowerment
