Who is best placed to venture, startups or legacy companies?
Today I read on WIRED (link in comments) an interview with Capita's Mark Lambert, who is making the contrarian point that actually legacy companies are the best placed ones. The picture below is taken during a visit to Mach49's Dave Blakely and Joseph Hawayek, who have a similar strong belief and impressive track record. There is a unicorn within your organization. IF... and that's a big if.. it manages to let the venture grow and be unleashed.
It's been on my mind since the visit. And I have had loads of talks with people about it. They sometimes agree, they are sometimes sceptic, and sometimes outright dismissive. Still, intuitively it makes so much sense. Corporates have so many things going for them. Resources, talent, experience, systems, etc. On the other hand, we are probably all avid users of services that didn't even exist 10-15 years ago.
So I'm going to research this more coming period. Starting here in The Netherlands and EU.
How innovative are corporates versus startups? How do they organize for success? What can we learn from the best cases? But also from the unsuccesful ones?
Really keen to learn more about this fascinating topic.
Would greatly appreciate any insights, research findings, or expert recommendations you might have. If you have thoughts on the topic or know someone knowledgeable, please share!
