How do you use data in design? Here’s an interesting perspective: data can be a source of power. That's from Wendy Owen, who leads design for Facebook at Meta. Wendy describes using data (of all kinds) as a source of power to build her intuition and create better conversations across the team. I like the different ways she talks about data and the different sources she considers (observational, behavioral, etc). The variety reminds me of Tommy Geoco's “Shapes of Work” concept. I’m noticing a peculiar design related anti-pattern of sorts in the post ZIRP economic environment. It’s where companies have the budget to staff design talent, albeit in lower numbers, but the development budget is so limited that teams are unable to implement the work designers produce. This is the third economic downturn I’ve experienced and we always get pendulum swings. In this one, there seems to be a bias toward austerity and implementing the least expensive solution.

$31k. Thats how much one of my portfolio companies has spent to get a (large, complex) hardware product into their first pilot. If they had paid a firm, they would've spent that much just on materials for this product. This was possible all because of this founder's determination! Firms have their place, but knowing when to use one and when not to is incredibly important as a startup. I'm not investing full-time anymore, but I still advise and invest on the side. If you are building hardware in the early days of your company, I would love to help you replicate this

Luis Ouriach your 'Simple Design System' is awesome. Chucked it into FigMayo and it's really fun to browse how you've constructed your components there. Seems like a good balance between simplicity and complexity. I like the more semantic naming of props as well, like "is dismissable" Looking forward to digging into code-connect some more. Some strong arguments in this article by Rune Madsen about why the field of product design has "lost its way" in his words: "Design workflows at most tech companies follow an incredible number of structured tasks... These concepts originated in the service design industry and initially helped facilitate a very human-focused design process – which, of course, is good. "However, driven by a desire from businesses to turn design into a process-heavy, measurable function, we’re filling our time with checklists instead of focusing on the very thing that makes designers relevant: our ability to propose new points of view and delight users with meaningful experiences. These core competences that were inherited from graphic design have been replaced with a poor man’s version of an anthropology major where the act of design is mostly based on averaging user opinions. "Design is both an objective and subjective art. But because of a persistent fear of making bad decisions, businesses have ended up leaning so heavily on objective measures that we have severely limited our ability to create meaningful impact within organizations." While Rune's article isn't focused on solutions, his articulation of the problem left me nodding my head in agreement. If there is a constant in the field of product design, it is this: We will spend our entire careers reminding, educating, and evangelizing why design exists. idk, the homogenizing of digital products in the last decade seems to have less to do with product/UX designers being qualified and more about orgs giving designers the space to commit to impactful design choices. The industry values problem solving, delivery, and familiarity very much more than thoughtful craft and composition - which are the most powerful design practices needed to produce relevant and usable products that make an impact. https://lnkd.in/gWSZbz4T

My personal experience is having an idea rejected solely because a key decision maker said (who has no knowledge of the subject): I don't like it. Is that the only metric by which we judge our ideas to customer-oriented solutions? In reality, the right approach could have been: Is it meeting our brief? Is it serving the scope and our customer? If you're innovating, ask your design team to create a well-crafted design brief. If you're a designer, help your clients develop clear design briefs. This then becomes the metric by which you not only accept solutions but reject solutions as well.
