Exciting to hear Chirantan "CJ" Desai of ServiceNow and Jensen Huang of NVIDIA discuss how #AI has scaled millions of times, over the last 10 years (#MooresLaw) at #Know2024 yesterday. And the era of "Manufacturing of #Digital #Intelligence at scale" to come! 😯 with "every aspect of computing moving to intention-driven computing", where the 'system' will understand the problem, without you having to be prescriptive! 🏅 The opportunity to move from "instruction-driven AI" to "intention-driven AI" represents a massive opportunity for everyone in #business, #commerce, public service, #publicsector, #notforprofit and all sectors. #AI solution providers and infrastructure providers committed to spend $1T on AI-related capex over the next few years, in anticipation of high demand for and heavy use of #generativeAI #enterprisesolutions. What return on investment (#ROI) does an enterprise need from each generative AI solution it deploys so that it can cross the generative AI chasm and for the huge investments in software, data, and infrastructure that have been committed to be justified?

At Microsoft, we're dedicated to empowering every scientist with AI-augmented scientific discovery. Our Azure Quantum Elements platform is a significant step in this direction, offering two new groundbreaking capabilities: Generative Chemistry for the exploration of novel molecular structures at an unprecedented scale and speed, and Accelerated DFT for simulating chemical catalysts and other complex molecular structures using core innovation developed by Microsoft Research. In our work with Unilever, they're harnessing the power of Azure Quantum Elements to drive forward scientific discovery. Unilever DataLab—a leading collaboration platform for in-silico R&D innovation built on Azure—is a prime example of digital transformation in action. From unlocking the secrets of our skin’s microbiome to reducing the carbon footprint of a multi-billion-dollar business, Unilever is redefining what it means to be a consumer goods company in the modern world with leading science. Earlier this year, we demonstrated with Quantinuum the most reliable logical qubits on record, further advancing the state-of-the-art for quantum computing. And recently, we simulated a chemical catalyst combining classical supercomputers, AI and logical qubits created with Microsoft’s qubit-virtualization system and Quantinuum’s H1 hardware. This combination holds the key to unlocking scientific breakthroughs enabled by a new generation of hybrid-computing applications. Learn more about the story behind these advancements and their impact on the future of science by reading my latest post on the Official Microsoft Blog: https://lnkd.in/gygcDd2D #AzureQuantum #AI #Science #Innovation

I was honored to speak last week at the Confidential Computing Summit 2024, where we discussed how confidential compute can be used to help us scale generative AI effectively and with confidence. By enabling multi-party, privacy-preserving data to enhance and activate gen AI models, confidential compute is unlocking untapped opportunities for companies and entire industries. Thank you to all who joined me to dive into the three critical areas where generative AI amplifies the value of Confidential Computing: data-sharing, IP protection, and secure inferencing. And a big shout out to my colleagues Teresa Tung and Giuseppe Giordano who also took the stage to explore this rich and evolving landscape. Data is a valuable and powerful asset for companies in the age of gen AI. We're excited to be part of any conversation around how to use it—safely and effectively—to accelerate ongoing reinvention. ☁ Last week Sai Senthilkumar and I presented the Redpoint InfraRed Report on how cloud infra & AI have shaped software & public markets in 2024! ⬇ Here are 10 takeaways and the full report: 1. Public infra companies are guiding lower. Almost half of public infra companies lowered their guidance last quarter. 2. These new expectations are reflected in the data with declining NDR (119% > 116%) & new bookings growth (16% > 13%). 3. After slowing in Q2'22, growth is rebounding across all public clouds in the past 3 quarters (Q3'23 - Q1'24). Represents MASSIVE investments from enterprises to move businesses at this scale. 4. AI is major driver of increase in cloud spending. 5. "Generative AI is the single most significant platform transition in computer history." - Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia. We are at the early stages of a platform shift to AI, which will completely transform how we build applications. 6. Training and inference costs are down. Training costs down 10x: $600k to train stable diffusion in Sep'22 now costs < $50k. Inference costs down 10x: from $0.006/1k tokens for Curie generations in Jan'22 to $0.0005/1k in April'23. 7. AI is getting smarter, cheaper and more accessible. This is leading to an explosion in developers building AI applications and driving the need for AI-specific tooling. 8. Consolidation in the data stack is putting pressure on point solutions. Both Snowflake and Databricks have been very active on the acquisition front this last year, most recently with Databricks acquiring Tabular for $1B+. 9. Coding with AI is now mainstream. 76% of devs use or expect to use an AI coding assistant. 84% of developers using an AI coding assistant use ChatGPT. 10. Wave of consolidation in the security stack as well. The top 5 Cybersecurity Vendors acquired 33 companies. 👇 If you want to read on, check out the full report published here: https://lnkd.in/drvNbTXy 🙏 Also huge thanks to Kevin He and Tony Shi for their help with the report!

🔝🦾AI firms want🇮🇳India to fast-track compute infra❕ 🔻In absence of any funding support from #venturecapitals, currently a lot of startups are not getting access to the right compute infra. ⚙️Artificial intelligence (#AI) infrastructure and software companies like #AMD, #Nvidia, Ola Krutrim, Reliance Jio, #Microsoft, People + AI and Yotta have urged the government to expedite creating compute infrastructure in the country as well as focus on sovereignty in AI systems. ⚡️This assumes significance as the government is looking to create a compute infrastructure through procurement of graphic processing units (GPUs) for startups that are looking for a variety of these chips to train their models. In absence of any funding support from venture capitals, currently a lot of startups are not getting access to the right compute infra. Read more…

For most “AI investing” it’s important to remember that AI is an enabling technology, not an industry segment itself. The underlying business fundamentals (industry, business model, unit economics, etc) of any startup are what drive enterprise value, and as a VC it's important to remain disciplined on the fundamentals when approaching deal making that involves any disruptive technology, like AI. Some of our thinking at 186 Ventures surrounding what we are seeing related to AI related deal making is highlighted in this PitchBook piece. Thanks for taking the time to chat Jacob Robbins!

By OpenAI CAN private companies pushing forward the frontier of a revolutionary new technology be expected to operate in the interests of both their shareholders and the wider world? When we were recruited to the board of OpenAl -Tasha in 2018 and Helen in 2021 - we were cautiously optimistic that the company's innovative approach to self-governance could offer a blueprint for responsible artificial intelligence (Al) development. But based on our experience, we believe that self-governance cannot reliably withstand the pressure of profit incentives. With Al's enormous potential for both positive and negative impact, it's not sufficient to assume that such incentives will always be aligned with the public good. For the rise of Al to benefit everyone, governments must begin building effective regulatory frameworks now.

☁📲 On-Device Processing: The Future of AI One key, but little-discussed aspect of the Apple Intelligence launch was on-device processing. This will be a critical factor for the widespread adoption of Generative AI. Currently, most AI processes, like those in ChatGPT, occur ‘in the cloud’. This means the response is processed on remote servers. While each request is low cost, they add up, leading to higher subscription fees, like ChatGPT’s $20/month, and of course they require internet access. Imagine if all these processes happened on your device using its own chips. Costs would plummet, 20 dollars could become 20 cents, making AI tools more accessible and powerful. Essentially, we’d each carry around our own personal cloud in our hands. This shift could drive mass consumer adoption, similar to how the introduction of low-cost airlines dramatically increased air travel. I guess the whole thing has been overshadowed by the Siri/Open AI partnership. But ‘on-device’ may be the most consequential thing to come out of the whole announcement. #AppleIntelligence #OnDeviceProcessing #GenAI #AI #ArtificialIntelligence
