I am excited to announce officially today LOOR Distro! LOOR Distro is best summed up with two strategic goals. 1. License and distribute our artists content to create more revenue for them. 2. Share funding and viewing data with other streaming platforms so they can make safer content acquisition investments. LOOR Distro is our way of taking monetization to our artists and our platform to the next level. By using our technology and the insane amount of individual data, both in watch time and most unique to us, funding data for our pilots and TV shows, and providing it to distribution companies looking for new streaming content. We are now beginning the process of taking this information, and connecting with the distributors we've established relationships with over the years and licensing user funded projects to other streaming networks in partnership with our artists. Basically LOOR is a way for the streaming industry to analyze data from an individual pilot without having to make an entire series order on a guess. It can prove to a streaming platform that there is in fact a market for content outside of the typical niche family-friendly genre. This increases the reach of LOOR content, and creates another significant revenue stream for us and the film makers as well. But most importantly it shows other family-friendly streaming companies content and data that can reach new audiences. And we have the data, not just the gut instinct. The one thing that LOOR has, that other streaming companies do not is individual funding data. The difference between viewing data and funding data has been tremendously eye opening for us and even surprising. For example did you know young adults with children are less likely to spend their money to fund new content for their preschoolers? In most all instances subscribers fund content for themselves and their age group over that of children's content. Yet, because preschool content is usually watched on repeat as background noise throughout the day the viewing metrics have skewed the importance of this content to the paying subscriber. Causing streaming companies to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on basically background noise that's on repeat. Kids content as background noise doesn't create loyalty and increases churn. Our viewing metrics and funding metrics are able to read these conclusions. LOOR Distro is something we've been working on since we started forming relationships and building the technology. Data has always been integral to every bit of code we wrote. But it's also the result of going to film festivals and meeting with others in the creative space. Talking to distributors and learning about their inability to to test content on newer demographics without significant risk. Prime an outlier in SVOD churn "Parks Associates’ most recent churn data, from its quarterly consumer survey of 8,000 internet households, shows that Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios has a churn rate of 8%, while Discovery+ is nearly at 43%." As the article mentions, there's a unique reason why Prime has lower #churnrate "Amazon Prime Video has held the lowest churn rate for the last two years because it is included with Prime." Prime perhaps shouldn't even be considered in the churn analysis. It's because, despite being the third largest SVOD/AVOD #streamingplatform it's totally different beast to its competitors. It’s an add-on to Prime, and not a standalone product. This provides distortion to the natural market dynamics, and a lot of protection for Prime in terms of churn. The more interesting aspect of the news is "Netflix continues to creep closer and reduce churn by adding more tiers of service and syndicated content." Netflix is the market leader in the space, and it seems they're going from strength to strength. In one area, via their pipeline, investment in local international content. But, that's only one part of a sustainable future. There's no point in investing huge amounts of money in production, if you've not got a sustainable base. Retention is as important as growth, and slow and stable growth with minimal churn is preferable to high growth but then high churn. Netflix's is diversifying its offerings, and cementing its position as the leading SVOD platform. One point that's surprising is that Discovery+ has the highest churn - isn't that HBO Max? Before Warner Bros. Discovery's Max can live up to its tagline of "the one to watch," the streaming service must first become "the one to not cancel." Alarmingly, Max has the least loyal customer base of any major streamer by one key measure, according to a report released this morning by Antenna. A staggering 80% of Max's users are either relatively new or had previously unsubscribed, Antenna found, which indicates that they may be more likely to cancel in the future. There's a clear answer to this massive issue: WBD's new bundle with streaming services from The Walt Disney Company. Disney Calendar Q1 2024 Earnings (FY Q2): DTC streaming business of Disney+ and Hulu had an operating income profit of $47M, ESPN+ lost $65 million. Added 6.3M Disney+ Core subs (117.6M total), excluding Disney+ Hotstar, which lost 2.3M subs. Hulu SVOD gained 700,000 subs (45.8M total), Hulu + Live TV lost 100,000 subs (4.5M total). ESPN+ lost 400,000 subs (24.8M total). Will add an ESPN Plus tile to Disney+ this fall, giving subscribers access to "select live games and studio programming" within the Disney+ app. Disney will begin cracking down on password sharing starting in some markets in June, followed by a wide rollout in September. Bundle in a Bungle Me, last December: “In 2024 expect the Battle of the Bundles to escalate. Every Media company with even a modicum of strategy will seek out bundle partnerships to deepen customer relationships, lower churn, and solidify their business models.” https://lnkd.in/euyx4c9U Disney & Disco Bros yesterday: “The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery will offer a bundle of the Disney+, Hulu, and Max streaming services in the US starting this summer, the companies said on Wednesday. Customers will be able to sign up on any of the three individual websites and chose from an ad-free or ad-supported plan. No prices were disclosed.” https://lnkd.in/eMdkgXAp Neat. EXCEPT… bundling a LOT of TV with even MORE TV is NOT going to truly address the total churn problem they’ve got. As I wrote earlier this week, more than 50% of Disney+ users DO NOT USE the service in an average month, and two-thirds of Max subs are inactive on average. THIS is why they churn. https://lnkd.in/eFRum6Pf But if these folks READ my piece at the first link, they’d KNOW that bundling is about way more than JUST video - and has been for decades. Ask Amazon - who does NOT have a #churn problem. Since the days of the triple play, bundling has been about UTILITY. Amazon knows this. Traditional Media SHOULD. But, either they never learned it (which is bonkers) or they’ve totally forgotten it… Which is why they are very likely doomed to repeat their mistakes all over again.

A really interesting perspective on TikTok and other social media. On the one hand they’ve made it easier to reach and build a fan base but is the paradox that it’s harder than ever for original art to cut through? Live undoubtedly trumps everything else when it comes to music and most other art forms. That’s why the current debate in the industry about both artist development and the grassroots is so important. YouTube Killed the TV Star For years, I’ve been telling you YouTube is the biggest TELEVISION network on TV - and one with an unparalleled advanced TV audience advertising machine. https://lnkd.in/eAykCjRa I’ve been warning y’all in the TV business that your TRUE competition now is NOT each other, but rather Google’s CTV Death Star. Seems Google liked that pitch, and turned it into their #Upfront presentation: “Other media companies unveil new TV shows coming to their services. YouTube used the stage to boast about its massive reach and engagement relative to traditional TV. YouTube‘s message to Madison Avenue: The video giant isn’t traditional TV. It’s bigger (with literally billions of viewers) and better at targeting relevant audiences.” https://lnkd.in/e_G-pZXy This week I dissected Nielsen’s new look Gauge, which breaks down TV viewing by publisher - across all platforms. https://lnkd.in/gaBZ3KfC With this analysis (my version below) YouTube comes in second for total monthly viewing. But, note, it takes ALL of The Walt Disney Company & Disney Streaming combined (ABC, ESPN, Disney+, Hulu) to best The Tube. It took ALL of NBCUniversal (NBC, Bravo, USA, Telemundo, MSNBC, Peacock), all of Paramount (Pluto TV, Paramount+, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, et al), and all of Disco Bros (TBS, TBT, MAX) to LOSE to YouTube. YouTube’s one, simple, massive app is by far the number one channel… ON TV. It’s the first stop on CTVs for most TV viewers under 35 and, everyday, more and more audiences over 36 too. And, crucially, they are better at video advertising than every other TV platform in the game - catering equally well to massive budgets from P&G and local pocketbook budgets from Mom & Pop Shops. Many in the TV ad biz will obsess this week over Netflix’s fancy shmancy Upfront and their Christmas NFL games. But Netflix’s total viewing (see below) is FAR off the competitive set - ESPECIALLY considering only 7% of their viewing is on the ad tier where viewers can (get this) see ads. (Kinda important in the Upfront.) But YouTube also had the NFL - and the NBA - at their presentation. More importantly, on their Upfront stage, YouTube represented the fastest growing segment of entertainment - The Creator Economy. While other TV platforms trotted out traditional Hollywood celebs to talk about a new wave of TV shows, YouTube brought out the biggest stars in the world that you’ve never heard of - Haley Kalil, Cleo Abram, Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Taty Cokley, Sydney Morgan, Zach King, Valkyrae. These new TV stars don’t just make shows, they command communities - in ways that limited series and procedural dramas never will. TV is not changing. It changed. Years ago. You may have missed it. But don’t worry, I’m sure there’s a video on YouTube about it, so you catch up.

As the discussions heat up between creators, songwriters, rights holders and DSPs around payment, I’m curious to see how meta-data is going to play a pivotal role in reshaping attribution. There needs to be a standardization across the industry and movement (speed of payment) that matches the pace of current technology. Robert Kyncl hits the nail on head here: “The other is that a lot of the revenue is flowing slow[ly], and some of it is trapped and that shouldn’t be [the case] for digital revenue. That [revenue] should be flowing way faster. Some of these things we just need to solve as an industry, and we haven’t yet. I look forward to doing that.” https://lnkd.in/eiVdS-qD
