Not to be confused with Key of Night or Ornate Shadow Key.
The Shadow Key is an item used solely to open Shadow Chests (found in the Underworld) and Obsidian Lock Boxes (found inside Obsidian and Hellstone Crates). It does not stack and is not consumed upon use; one Shadow Key can be used to open unlimited Shadow Chests.
On the Nintendo version, a Shadow Key has a 75% chance to drop from Arch Wyverns. On every other platform, the first Shadow Key in a world can only be obtained from the Dungeon inside (Golden Chests, Water Chests or Biome Chests). Subsequent Shadow Keys can sometimes be found locked inside Golden Lock Boxes
, which come from Dungeon and Stockade Crates (both must be fished from the Dungeon).
Notes[]
- In the
PC version,
Console version,
Mobile version, and
tModLoader version, the Shadow Key can be found in chests alongside another unique Dungeon treasure. In the
Old-gen console version,
Windows Phone version,
Old Chinese version, Nintendo
version, and
tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version however, the Shadow Key will be the only unique treasure for that chest.
