Tusken Sign Language[3] was the language used by the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine. It was distinct from the oral language Tusken.
Behind the scenes[]
- "How the process worked is I would give them three different options for one specific line and say, 'Okay, option A, B, or C?' … And they'd say, 'Okay, I really like B.' So we'd keep B as the sign for one specific line or phrase ... with one hand you might be holding a gun. So what is the Tuscan Raider going to sign with their other hand? You don't want them to drop the gun, so you have to come up with a one-handed sign, and you play around with the props. And so that really gives them more options that way, and it's a lot more fun to go through the process."
- ―Troy Kotsur, describing the development process
The language was developed by Troy Kotsur.[3] The "Troy Kotsur: Tusken Translator" article in Star Wars Insider 215 gave the language the name "galactic sign language,"[5] which this article assumes to be a mistake due to the name "Tusken Sign Language" implying it is unique to the Tusken Raiders.[3]
