"The Skiff & the Galleons" is a short story that was published in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge-exclusive edition Myths & Fables. The story was written by George Mann, illustrated by Grant Griffin, and published on October 7, 2020.

Plot summary[]

According to legend, when hyperdrives were still a primitive technology there was a crew of wayfarers led by a women named Ariana Surabat. Despite having the fortune to purchase a bigger and faster ship Surabat stuck with her reliable Skiff, the Ravenstar.

While looking for a job the crew of the Ravenstar heard about a competition to map a route to a rumor planet in the Outer Rim. The planet previously had many failed attempts to reach it so many trading companies had offered a grand prize for anyone who could make it to the world and back. Having decided to join the completion the Ravenstar prepare for the long journey with two other much larger and newer ships. The first was captained by a Rodian named Baloch and the other was captained by a human named Phillian.

After letting the two Galleons launched first the Ravenstar embarked and traveled alone for days following the trajectory provided by the stellar cartographers. As the days past the crew started to become to fear that they could get lost or even if they made it to the planet that the other ships would have arrived first and they would not get the reward. Surabat listened to the concerns but convinced the crew to continue on for she believed she understood the other captains and that they would fail.

As more days past and the crew's supply of food ran down the Ravenstar came up on the remains of one of the two Galleons. The captain suspect it was attacked by pirates and despite the delay it would cause she order the crew to search the wreck for survivors.

On the Galleon the crew discovered one lone survivor, a human named Kreth, who had hidden behind a wall panel when the pirates attacked and took the captain for ransom. Despite the initial concerns of her crew about the added resource costs and fuel consumption Surabat offered that Kreth join the crew for the rest of their voyage.

As the Ravenstar continued food and water were rationed. While Kreth managed to increase the engine efficiency to stretch the fuel reserves of the ship. After days of hardship the Ravenstar came up on a field of debris from the many ships that had previously failed to make it to the mysterious planet. Using long range sensors the crew managed to find the rumored planet was not far off. However the crew also discovered the second galleon among the debris, but instead of being stranded the ship was docked with one of the previous wrecks, presumably stripping it of treasures and resources.

Seeing the Ravenstar, Captain Phillian proposed a race to the planet and offered up the salvaged treasure she had taken from the ship wrecks. After agreeing the Galleon launched at full speed while the Ravenstar continued on its original speed. After days of travel the Ravenstar caught up to the Phillian's Galleon which had burned to much fuel and had begun to drift. Before the Ravenstar rendered assistance to the Galleon the crew made planet fall securing their victory in the race.
