"At the end of RepComm, there were two competing ideas for follow ups that I guess would abbreviate to ImpComm and RebComm."
―Brett Douville, on the planned sequels of Star Wars: Republic Commando[1]

Star Wars: Imperial Commando is the canceled sequel to the 2005 video game Star Wars: Republic Commando. The sequel had already been planned during the development of Republic Commando, but the game was canceled in 2004 with several concept art paintings completed. The game was to set Imperial Commando soldiers against the Rebel Alliance and lightsaber-wielding opponents.

Plot summary[]

Star Wars: Imperial Commando was to focus on the Imperial Commando units, the elite ground combat soldiers of the Galactic Empire,[2] which was formed in 19 BBY.[3] At least part of the combat in the game was to take place against Rebel Alliance troopers and pilots of species such as Humans, Kel Dors, Twi'leks, and Wookiees, and Alliance starfighters, including the X-wing, Y-wing, and A-wing. Lightsaber-wielding enemies were also to be depicted.[2]

Development[]

"These didn't happen and maybe were never even formally pitched as a result of the company rebooting itself, as I mentioned. Very few people involved with Republic Commando ended up staying on as LucasArts attempted to find its way forward."
―Brett Douville[4]

The video game was to be a military shooter and a sequel to the 2005 first-person shooter game Star Wars: Republic Commando, which focused on the clone commando unit Delta Squad.[1] The lead level designer on Republic Commando, Kevin Schmitt, pitched the idea for Imperial Commando.[4] The other confirmed LucasArts crew member on the sequel project was Greg Knight, who drew concept sketches and paintings for the title between 2003 and the project's cancellation in 2004. The concept art included images of Imperial Commando Special Unit troopers along with images depicting Rebel pilots and their starfighters as well as individuals carrying lightsabers.[2]

By the time of the cancellation of Star Wars: Imperial Commando, design documents had been completed.[1] The LucasArts documentary book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts,[2] written by Rob Smith and published in 2008,[5] was the first source to confirm details about the project.[2] LucasArts developer Brett Douville commented in 2014 that the title was one of two competing designs for the sequel, along with Star Wars: Rebel Commando,[1] which was to follow up on the story of Sev, a member of Delta Squad whose fate was left open at the end of the first game. The team had been unsure of whether the sequel would be successful, since sales projections for Star Wars: Republic Commando had been low[6] and the game studio moved forward with different staff.[4]

Continuity[]

Despite being part of the Star Wars: Republic Commando multimedia series, Star Wars: Imperial Commando was not confirmed to be a continuation of the story of Delta Squad,[2] as opposed to the planned Star Wars: Rebel Commando.[4]
