"We're sending an evasion vector. Follow these maneuvers precisely and await a tractor lock when you clear the scaraphyte swarm. One wrong move and you will perish in an agonizing plume of corrosive gastric decompression."
―A Hivebase-1 crewmember, to Chelli Aphra, over comms[1]

Scaraphytes were acidic space-borne creatures. A swarm of them surrounded the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative base Hivebase-1, and a specific flight vector was required to evade the creatures when approaching the base. Around 1 ABY, the mobile rebel flight school Lucrehulk Prime was lured to Hivebase-1 by the rogue archaeologist Chelli Aphra as a distraction to infiltrate the complex. The scaraphytes swarmed and damaged the flight school but eventually went erratic when they were fired upon by Aphra's droid Dek-Nil.

Biology and appearance[]

"Shields! Raise the shields! Those things'll corrode through the hull—"
―Rebel personnel aboard the Lucrehulk Prime[1]

Scaraphytes were tentacled creatures that roamed space. The creatures were acidic and could corrode the hulls of starships.[1]

History[]

"We're detecting erratic behavior in the swarm, but we've found a clear shot."
―An Imperial officer on Hivebase-1[2]

During the time of the Galactic Civil War, a scaraphyte swarm surrounded the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative research and development hub Hivebase-1, with a precise flight vector being needed to evade their corrosion.[1] Around 1 ABY,[3] a mercenary crew led by the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra sought to infiltrate and steal data from the R&D complex and negotiated a deal with the base to trade the Rebel Alliance General Hera Syndulla. Aphra's ship was given the flight vectors to get past the scaraphyte swarm before it was set to be locked on by a tractor beam. However, believing that the Imperials would betray her, Aphra lured Syndulla's ship, the mobile rebel flight school[1] Lucrehulk Prime,[4] to Hivebase-1 as a distraction.[1]

The flight school immediately fell under attack by the scaraphytes. The rebels aboard the Lucrehulk Prime scrambled to raise the vessel's deflector shields against the scaraphyte swarm and redirect their personnel as the creatures began corroding the hull, soon totaling the outer decks. Aphra, meanwhile, used the chaos to infiltrate Hivebase-1 with her crew.[1] While aboard the complex, she used a bug she had planted in the flight school to have the ship cling to the base and tractor beam its datacore out, with most of the remaining mercenary crew and Syndulla inside. The scaraphytes continued to surround the Lucrehulk Prime but began behaving erratically when Aphra's droid Dek-Nil began shooting into the swarm. Hivebase-1 was destroyed shortly after thanks to Aphra, with the Lucrehulk Prime escaping with the base's core.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Scaraphytes first appeared in the eighteenth issue of the 2016 comic series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, written by Si Spurrier, illustrated by Emilio Laiso, and published by Marvel Comics[1] on March 28, 2018.[5]
