Han Solo: "What are you guys playing?"
Kaasha Bateen: "Saigok, it's like dejarik, same madman invented them both in fact, but saigok is way more badass."
Lando Calrissian: "Makes dejarik look like cambiblocks."
―Solo, Bateen, and Calrissian discuss saigok[1]

Saigok was a two-player turn-based board game. A highly strategic game, both saigok and the similar dejarik were invented by the same individual. The Free Ryloth Movement required its members to master saigok as part of their tactical training. The Twi'lek Kaasha Bateen was a strong player, and her partner Lando Calrissian was not. The two played against each other in 7 ABY.

Description[]

"We have to master it as part of tactical training on Ryloth. Lando sucks at it."
―Kaasha Bateen[1]

Saigok was a turn-based board game invented by the same individual who created the game dejarik. Saigok was a two-player game that involved small cards and metal figurines, with players making moves to different locations on the board, such as C-four, eighteen-alpha, ninety-nine, and thirty-nine-Vector. Players could block their opponents' moves. Saigok required strategic thinking, and members of the Free Ryloth Movement were required to master the game as part of their tactical training.[1]

History[]

"C-four to eighteen-alpha."

Kaasha Bateen

Kaasha Bateen was an adept saigok player.

During her time on[1] the planet[2] Ryloth with the Free Ryloth Movement, the Twi'lek fighter Kaasha Bateen became a skilled saigok player.[1] In 7 ABY,[3] while traveling aboard the ZV-9 freighter Vermillion to[1] the planet[2] Kashyyyk, Bateen joined her partner, the former smuggler Lando Calrissian, in the freighter's main hold to play saigok. As the New Republic agent Han Solo watched them play, Bateen described the game to him, saying it was similar but more "badass" than dejarik. Calrissian agreed, stating saigok made dejarik look like a child's toy by comparison. Bateen also told Solo that Calrissian was a very poor player. Later, while making their way to Substation Grimdock, a New Republic prison complex, the Wookiee Chewbacca tried his luck at beating Bateen. From the cargo hold, Solo heard Chewbacca's roars of disapproval and Bateen's victorious laughter as they played.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Saigok appeared in the 2018 novel Last Shot, which was written by Daniel José Older.[1]
