Photoproteins were a bioluminescent type of protein that could be found on the planet Reena. The glow caused by photoproteins after they were washed out by rainfall was celebrated during the annual Queen's Bloom Festival.

Description[]

Photoproteins were a type of protein that had bioluminescence. On the planet Reena, photoproteins resided in the rain until getting washed out onto the pollen of various plants. When the torrential season ended and the plants bloomed, the photoproteins would begin to glow in various colors.[1]

History[]

Members of the Jedi Order (crest pictured) were invited by the dean of theological studies to the festival out of hope they would prove his theory.

The annual occurrence of photoproteins being washed out on Reena was marked by the Queen's Bloom Festival. Reena University student Axel Greylark, who attended the university[1] around 396 BBY,[2] was aware of how photoproteins caused the phenomenon to occur and found it pretty, though he also regarded the celebration of the occurrence as an excuse to attract tourists to Reena. The university's dean of theological studies believed the phenomenon to have some connection to the Force and had invited a group of Jedi to the Queen's Bloom Festival out of hope that they could prove his theory. Greylark regarded the dean's theory as "hokey" but appreciated the distraction the Jedi's presence provided as he attempted to flaunt his duties at the festival.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Photoproteins were mentioned in the short story "The Queen's Bloom," written by Zoraida Córdova and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1] In real life, photoproteins are a reactant produced by bioluminescent organisms that provide them with the capability to emit light.[3]

As Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates the events of Convergence to 382 BBY, he must have been born in 413 BBY. Greylark is seventeen years old in "The Queen's Bloom," dating its events to around 396 BBY.
