The hyperpaths,[1] also known as the Paths for short,[2] were routes through hyperspace utilized by the Nihil marauder group. The Paths were unlike regular hyperspace routes, however, in that they were impossible according to conventional navigation systems. The hyperspace prospector Mari San Tekka possessed a unique ability to locate them, and as such was taken by the family of Marchion Ro, kept alive for over a century in a medical capsule.[2] With the family having controlled the Paths for generations,[3] Ro's father, Asgar, utilized the Paths after taking control of the Nihil, then a small gang, providing the Nihil with Paths in order to undertake operations. The Nihil vessels were equipped with Path engines, devices that translated the Paths into navigational data.[2]

Like much of the Nihil's imagery[4] and terminology,[5] the term "the Path" had its roots in the Ro family[4] of Evereni, who formed the marauder group as part of their plan for revenge against the Jedi.[5] The term "the Path" appeared in the name of the Elders of the Path religious order, which the Nihil had grown out of.[6] That Path's predecessor had been the Path of the Open Hand,[7] an extremist[8] missionary group that Marda Ro was part of.[9] When the Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro, who provided Tekka's Paths to the rest of the Nihil, arrived on the planet Rystan, his cousin Kufa referred to it as him returning to "the Path" before the two travelled to the Shrine where the Great Leveler was kept.[4]
