"We can collect Gamorrean coral anytime. But what if we went after something rarer? Rather more valuable?"
"Like what? Mustafar fire diamonds?"
―Jewel thieves Pax Maripher and Rahara Wick[1]

Mustafar fire diamonds were a type of rare diamond from the Outer Rim planet Mustafar. Jedi Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn was given one of the diamonds by his paramour on the Outer Rim planet Felucia in 60 BBY and kept it as a memento for the next twenty years. In 40 BBY, he gave the item to jewel thieves Pax Maripher and Rahara Wick to thank them for their help during his mission on the Inner Rim planet Pijal.

Description[]

"Is that—a Mustafar fire diamond?"
―Rahara Wick[1]

Mustafar fire diamonds were a rare type of diamond found on[1] the volcanic Outer Rim planet[2] Mustafar.[1]

History[]

"Not as valuable as a piece of meryx, surely, but it ought to more than cover your time here on Pijal."
"And would if we remained here another three years. And you're just giving it to us? Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
―Qui-Gon Jinn and Pax Maripher, about the former's Mustafar fire diamond[1]

Qui-Gon Jinn was given a Mustafar fire diamond on Felucia and kept it as a memento for twenty years.

During the Republic Era, Mustafar fire diamonds were considered more valuable than Gamorrean coral but less than meryx gemstones. By that time, the expensive diamonds were considered difficult to collect. While on[1] the Outer Rim planet[2] Felucia[1] in 60 BBY, the Jedi Padawan[3] Qui-Gon Jinn was given a Mustafar fire diamond by his paramour. He kept it in a pouch on his utility belt as a closely treasured memento for the next twenty years to remind him of the memories they shared together and the moment it was given to him.[1]

In 40 BBY,[4] while on their Gozanti-class cruiser Meryx, the jewel thieves Pax Maripher and Rahara Wick briefly discussed collecting Mustafar fire diamonds. However, they opted to search for kyber crystals on the Inner Rim planet Pijal instead, with the latter considering the collection of the diamonds a more miserable experience than working on Gamorr,[1] an Outer Rim planet[2] she felt was disgusting.[1]

While on Pijal, the pair met Jinn—who was now a Jedi Master—and assisted him with his mission to locate the Opposition performance troupe. Jinn bequeathed his fire diamond to Maripher and Wick to thank them for their help. Maripher questioned the decision due to the gemstone's value, which was worth enough to cover their work on the world and sustain the pair financially for three years if they remained there. However, Jinn still handed it to Wick, reminiscing on what his paramour's memento had meant to him, but reasoned that he could reflect on the memories associated with the diamond without holding onto it.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

"…you have a moment with him and Pax and Rahara that is him sort of symbolically letting go of that to some extent and wishing well to this other couple that's gonna go forward and have this very different kind of life."
―Claudia Gray, about Qui-Gon Jinn giving away his Mustafar fire diamond[5]

Mustafar fire diamonds appeared in Master & Apprentice, a 2019 novel written by Claudia Gray.[1] In an interview, Gray expressed that the novel's final scene in which Jinn gives his former paramour's diamond to Maripher and Wick symbolized his way of letting go of his past relationship.[5]
