"If we can get the Ansionians to commit to pulling out of the Republic, no one will really care. But because of their alliances, their withdrawal should be enough to sway their already vacillating partners in both the Malarian Alliance and the Keitumite Treaty to follow."
Presidente Shu Mai[4]

Malari was a Mid Rim planet located in the Churnis sector. It was the origin point of the Malarians and was both a member of the Galactic Republic and a signatory of the Malarian Alliance treaty, the latter of which bound it to the planet Ansion. In 22 BBY, the Confederacy of the Independent Systems sought to facilitate the secession of the Malarian Alliance from the Republic; however, the Separatist plans were foiled by a Jedi mission to Ansion, which resulted in the planet and the alliance remaining loyal to the Republic.

Description[]

Malari[2][5] was a planet[3] located in the Malari system, a part of the Churnis sector of the Mid Rim.[1]

History[]

"Assuming the internal divisions continue to widen, I would expect a formal vote on whether to withdraw from the Republic within half a standard year."
"At which point we can look on with satisfaction as those who have been traditionally allied to Ansion follow suit, and those allied to the allies fall in turn."
―Ansion's Senator Mousul and Presidente Shu Mai[4]
Ansion-TEA

The Malarian Alliance linked Malari to Ansion (pictured).

By 22 BBY,[6] Malari was linked to[3] the Mid Rim planet Ansion[2] both commercially and militarily via the Malarian Alliance, a treaty[3] that had been established at some point by approximately 33 BBY.[7] By the former year,[6] Malari was also a member of the Galactic Republic.[3] The Malarian Alliance placed Malari in a web of mutual affiliations with three star systems: the Mamendin system of the Core Worlds and the Mid Rim's Ansion and Dbari systems. In addition, Malari, its partner star systems, and the Keitumite Mutual Military Treaty—also affiliated with both the Malari system and Ansion—all had treaties of their own with other worlds, which led to the seemingly insignificant Ansion lying at the center of a network of approximately forty politically connected systems. During the ongoing Separatist Crisis,[2] signatory systems of both the Malarian Alliance and the Keitumite Mutual Military Treaty were individually considering leaving the Republic.[4]

The Confederacy of Independent Systems intended to facilitate the secession of Ansion from the Republic, which was predicted by the Separatists to cause a cascade of secession by all the systems linked to the planet via its treaties, as well. However, a mission to Ansion undertaken at the time by members of the Jedi Order on behalf of the Republic resulted in that world[2] and its partners remaining loyal to the galactic government,[4] foiling the Separatist plans. At some point following the establishment of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the newly appointed Imperial Moff of the Churnis sector declared all existing treaties and alliances involving Ansion to be null and void.[2]

Inhabitants[]

Malari was the origin world of the social group known as the Malarians.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Malari was first indirectly mentioned in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Malari system, and therefore the planet, in grid square I-6.[2] Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, has stated that the star systems listed in the book's Appendix section are named after the most prominent planets or celestial bodies located in those systems. This article therefore considers the origin world of the Malarians to be named in accordance with the Malari system.[5]
