- "I got to step into the world of Star Wars … which is an enormous calling. Then I got to work with an incredible team to create a Twi'lek character that we haven't seen before. I got to work with extraordinary creatives who are playful and have a palpable, childlike joy when it comes to this world."
- ―Jennifer Beals
Jennifer Beals is an American actress who played Garsa Fwip in the live-action television show The Book of Boba Fett.[3] She is best known for playing the lead role in the 1983 romantic drama film Flashdance, and starring as Bette Porter in the drama series The L Word.
Biography[]
Beals got a phone call offering her the role[4] and accepted, feeling that stepping into the world of Star Wars was an "enormous calling."[2] She immediately began to watch The Mandalorian for preparation.[4]
During the shooting, the actress didn't know which Star Wars production she was part of, due to the studio's secrecy. However, she would talk to Dave Filoni about her character and the Twi'lek species, "about character and how is this person different perhaps than the lineage that's come before, and what has informed her experiences and then how does that change the way she looks or behaves — or dresses for that matter."[4] According to Beals, she and director Robert Rodriguez talked about Fwip being like the character Rick Blaine from the 1942 film Casablanca. Since Fwip was a woman she had to step into that power in a different way to how Blaine did in his respective film, earning it over gaining it by virtue.[2]
The lekku prosthetics that the actress wore were designed to be lightweight, and were perfectly balanced for her skull; they were easy to keep on and could be taken off if she needed a break.[4] In addition, Beals sent images to costume designer Shawna Trpcic, related to things she saw during meditations, which the designer incorporated into the outfit.[2]
According to Beals, she had a "tremendous" time working on the show, with fellow cast members Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen making the set "incredibly joyful."[4] She stated that Morrison would sing for people between takes, and director Robert Rodriguez played guitar in his room, which was next to hers.[4][2]
