WJ-880 blinding helmets,[3] also known as Jedi youngling helmets[4] or simply youngling helmets, were a type of gray patterned helmet worn during training by younglings of the Jedi Order. They were large domed headpieces that could be used to cover the wearer's eyes, masking their vision and training them to use the Force rather then their bodily senses alone.[1] In 22 BBY,[5] the younglings of Bear Clan all wore Jedi youngling helmets while training to block blaster bolts with training lightsabers[1] under the supervision of Grand Master Yoda in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"So first we've got a youngling's helmet."
"Oh, it's so light!"
"This design was based off of the younglings featured in the prequels. As you can see, it's a lot smaller because it is for kids."
―A member of the Lucasfilm Archives and Kristin Baver discussing the helmet prop used in Obi-Wan Kenobi[6]

Jedi youngling helmets first appeared in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, the second installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.[2] They were first identified in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.[4] The design of the prop used in the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series was based off of the helmets worn by younglings in the prequels.[6]
