The Inferno was an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer in the service of the Imperial Navy shortly before the Battle of Yavin. It was featured in the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, a tactical manual compiled by the Galactic Empire, as an example of a standard Imperial Star Destroyer for a section detailing the Imperial Navy's primary warships.

Description[]

A product of Kuat Drive Yards, the Inferno was a 1,600-meter-long[1] Imperial I-class Star Destroyer.[2] Its powerful main battery consisted of six heavy turbolaser turrets and two heavy ion cannon turrets. Numerous smaller turbolasers provided an anti-starfighter defensive screen, while additional ion cannons and tractor beam projectors rounded out the Star Destroyer's armaments.[1]

The Inferno carried a full wing of TIE Series starfighters, organized into six squadrons of seventy-two total fighters. The fighter complement included TIE fighters, interceptors, and bombers; additional shuttles, gunboats, and other vessels were also carried aboard.[1]

For planetside operations, the Inferno's arsenal included twenty All Terrain Armored Transports and many smaller walkers, along with dropships to transport them. Nearly 37,000 men comprised the Inferno's crew, with an additional 9,700 ground troops.[1]

A solar ionization reactor provided power to the Inferno, enabling its three primary ion engines and four supplemental thrusters. Two sensor and communications globes atop the Star Destroyer's bridge doubled as deflector shield generators.[1]

History[]

The Inferno was one of the tens of thousands of Imperial Star Destroyers serving in the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire[1] during the early years of the Galactic Civil War. It had entered service by 0 BBY, prior to the dissolution of the Imperial Senate.[3]

The Star Destroyer was featured in the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, a tactical manual compiled in preparation for the completion of the Empire's first Death Star battlestation and distributed just prior to the Battle of Yavin. The Inferno was depicted in a section entitled "Imperial Navy Ships of the Fleet," authored by Admiral Conan Antonio Motti, where it provided a visual example of the standard Imperial Star Destroyer.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Inferno appears in the 2014 Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, written by Daniel Wallace as an in-universe set of tactical procedures and mission reports for all newly ascending Imperial commanders. The Star Destroyer's illustration was provided by artist Joe Corroney.[1] In 2019, 3D artist Ansel Hsiao, known for his work on The Essential Guide to Warfare, complained that some of the artwork published on his website were reused without his consent by Corroney for the Imperial Handbook. Such artwork included the illustration of the Inferno.[4][5]

The Imperial Handbook depicts the Inferno as a standard example of an Imperial Star Destroyer for the book's section on Imperial Navy warships. The Inferno's illustration accompanies a brief outline detailing the various armaments and battle complements of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer;[1] as such, this article applies these specifics to the Inferno itself.

  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide describes the Imperial Star Destroyer's main battery as consisting of "six heavy turbolaser turrets and two heavy ion cannon turrets." This particular weapon assortment corresponds specifically to the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, according to Star Wars: Complete Cross-Sections.
  3. 3.0 3.1 As presented in Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, which is dated before the Battle of Yavin, Emperor Palpatine's introduction to the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide states that the Galactic Empire "has existed for nineteen years." The Empire was founded in 19 BBY, according to The New Essential Chronology, thereby dating the creation of the Imperial Handbook, which features the Inferno, to 0 BBY. Additionally, the Imperial Handbook states that it predates the dissolution of the Imperial Senate, which SWAJsmall "Galaxywide NewsNets" — Star Wars Adventure Journal 3 dates to 35:3:5. The New Essential Chronology further places this time period within the first few years of the Galactic Civil War.
