Ianane III was a Wild Space planet whose surface was completely covered by a deep layer of sand. The planet had violent storms in its atmosphere, and the brightness of its surface for a long time caused it to be misidentified as a star. Ianane III was orbited by the ruins of the Ianane Ring, believed to be constructed by the long-disappeared Celestials.

Ianane III was the third planet of the Ianane system,^[2] located within the galaxy's Wild Space region.^[1] Its surface was encased by a layer of glass-like sand hundreds of meters in depth. The razor-sharp sand particles gave rise to monstrous storms in the planet's atmosphere. Sunlight reflected from the sand on Ianane III's surface resulted in the planet appearing white from space and being nearly as bright as its star.^[2]

History[]

The brightness of Ianane III's surface caused the^[2] Wild Space^[1] world to be misidentified for ages as a second star in its system. Travel to the Ianane system was made difficult by its location amidst a maze of hyperspatial anomalies, but for a long time those scientists who returned alive from a visit to Ianane III nevertheless became fascinated by the unusual world.^[2]

Ianane III was orbited by fragments of the ring-like structure known as the Ianane Ring. It was widely believed to be constructed by members of the sentient Celestial species,^[2] who had disappeared from the galaxy by 30,000 BBY.^[3] The surface features of the Ianane Ring had at some point been reduced to black ash, which contrasted with the color of Ianane III's surface.^[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Ianane III was originally meant to be mentioned in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the sidebar that would have mentioned the planet was cut before the book's release.^[2]

The information regarding Ianane III was later released in 2013 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from The Essential Guide to Warfare.^[2] The StarWars.com Online Companion to the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Ianane system, and therefore Ianane III, in grid square I-10.^[1]
