"This fresh-caught hammerfish—glazed with a sweet sauce made from island ingredients—ended up bein' a huge hit with the tourists on Glee Anselm's beaches."
―Strono Tuggs in The Ultimate Cookbook, about his dish Broiled Hammerfish[2]

Hammerfish were a type of fish from the Mid Rim planet Glee Anselm. At some point, the Nautolan Finial Bright hunted the fish while on Glee Anselm, and later reflected that they visually resembled the shape and aesthetics of a Longbeam cruiser. Between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs traveled to the world and created a dish made of a sweet sauce and the fish—Broiled Hammerfish—in an attempt to mend relations between the planet's two sentient species, the Nautolans and the Anselmi.

Biology and appearance[]

Hammerfish were a type of fish that had thick, blunt skulls and elegant, sinuous tailfins. They could be eaten as food by Artiodacs.[1]

History[]

RepublicDefenseCoalition

Finial Bright felt that the shape of a Longbeam cruiser (pictured) was similar to that of a hammerfish.

Hammerfish hailed from the oceans of the Mid Rim planet Glee Anselm.[2] By the time of the High Republic Era, the Nautolan Finial Bright hunted hammerfish on Glee Anselm and became familiar with their traits. While serving as a Republic Defense Coalition captain aboard the Longbeam cruiser Aurora IX[1] in 232 BBY,[3] Bright thought about his cruiser's aesthetics and shape, mentally comparing it to what a hammerfish looked like.[1]

During a culinary tour of the galaxy that he took[2] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY,[4] the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs traveled to Glee Anselm and created a dish named Broiled Hammerfish to try and improve relations between the world's two native sentient species—the Nautolans and the Anselmi. He crafted the entrée using a sweet sauce made from island ingredients and freshly caught hammerfish. Though tourists to the world enjoyed the hammerfish dish, Tuggs felt that his invention was not enough to completely soothe tensions between the Nautolans and the Anselmi, though it at least did not worsen the feuding. The chef later documented his trip to Glee Anselm—including his creation of Broiled Hammerfish— in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published[2] in 35 ABY.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

Hammerfish were first mentioned in Light of the Jedi, a 2021 novel written by Charles Soule as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[5] The 2023 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak, included an out-of-universe recipe for Broiled Hammerfish that called for cubed salmon.[2]

  3. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of The High Republic: Light of the Jedi to 232 BBY.
  4. 4.0 4.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
