"Don't be a naïve calf. No, the pilot didn't want to be discovered. But he's still here. If he didn't want us to blast him out of the sky out there, you really think he'd be eager to die in here?"
―Rae Sloane to Nils Tothwin, in Docking Bay 42[2]

Docking Bay 42 was a docking bay on the Imperial Star Destroyer Vigilance. In 4 ABY, when New Republic pilot Wedge Antilles' HH-87 Starhopper—the Rover—was towed into the bay, he opted to rig it to explode and flee the scene. In the ensuing fiery aftermath, Admiral Rae Sloane instructed Lieutenant Nils Tothwin to search for Antilles. The Vigilance—Docking Bay 42 included—was destroyed not long after in a battle over the Outer Rim planet Akiva.

Description[]

Docking Bay 42 was a docking bay on the Vigilance, a Star Destroyer of the Galactic Empire. The bay featured a glass-encased balcony and was large enough to fit a battalion of stormtroopers and several TIE fighters.[2]

History[]

"Could be a suicide attack. Maximize the damage—"
"No. He's here. And he can't be far. Find him."
"Yes, Admiral. Right away."
―Nils Tothwin and Rae Sloane, after Wedge Antilles' ship exploded in the bay[2]

The Vigilance was in the Galactic Empire's service by 0 ABY.[3] In 4 ABY,[1] Imperial admiral Rae Sloane ordered a battalion of stormtroopers and several TIE fighters to report to the bay when the Vigilance's tractor beam was bringing the Rover, a HH-87 Starhopper flown by the New Republic pilot Wedge Antilles, onto the Star Destroyer. She observed her forces from Docking Bay 42's balcony with Lieutenant Nils Tothwin, musing over the subpar quality of those under her command.[2]

However, as the Rover drifted into Docking Bay 42, Antilles rigged his ship to explode while he fled the scene. As Sloane watched, two black astromech droids used foam to extinguish the fire caused by the incident, navigating around several stormtroopers' bodies. Furious at the resulting damage, the admiral ordered Tothwin to have her forces search the premises for the pilot. Sloane dismissed the latter's suggestion that Antilles may have been trying to avoid capture by ending his own life, leaving several stormtroopers' bodies in the bay as a reminder to others. Following the event, Sloane studied a hologram of the docking bay and eventually concluded that Antilles must have escaped through the area's ducts. Not long afterward, the Vigilance—including Docking Bay 42—was destroyed in a battle over the Outer Rim planet Akiva.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Docking Bay 42 appeared in Aftermath, a 2015 novel written by Chuck Wendig as the first installment in Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy.[2]
