"But Old Republic records chronicle the Vultar Cataclysm, an event in which the activation of an artifact known as the Cosmic Turbine destroyed that system. I suspect this Turbine was of Celestial origin."
―Edited transcript of the debriefing of Doctor Insmot Bowen[5]

The Cosmic Turbine was an immense device capable of manipulating gravity on a large scale. Part of a set of massive machines located in the Vultar system, it was created by the ancient Celestial species. When a group of Dark Jedi took up residence in the Vultar system in 4250 BBY, they attempted to use the Cosmic Turbine and other devices against their enemy, the Jedi Order. However, a catastrophic accident after the technology's activation destroyed the entire Vultar system, including the Dark Jedi and the Celestial machinery. Tens of millennia later, the Cosmic Turbine was discussed by the Obroan Institute for Archaeology researcher Doctor Insmot Bowen when the Galactic Empire debriefed them on the Celestials.

Description[]

"But I think I understand—in broad outline, mind you—how the Celestials did what they did. I think their Turbines were tractor-repulsors built to move planets and stars through hyperspace."
―Edited transcript of the debriefing of Doctor Insmot Bowen[5]

The Cosmic Turbine was an extraordinary,[2] immense machine[4] that was a part of a set of massive devices located in the Vultar system.[3] The powerful[6] Cosmic Turbine and another creation of the Celestial species, the Corellian system's Centerpoint Station, could manipulate gravity on a large scale via the use of hyperspace tractor beams, repulsor pulses, and hyperspace wormholes.[1]

History[]

"Doctor, are you saying you believe the Celestials built the Corellian system using this… Galactic Engine?"
"Cosmic Turbine. It's possible, General. Though I wonder if the Turbine might have been part of a network of such devices, most of them now dismantled or destroyed—or perhaps yet to be found, out there in the Unknown Regions."
―General Arhul Kurumenga and Doctor Insmot Bowen, edited transcript of Bowen's debriefing[5]

The Cosmic Turbine was created by the Celestials at some point before the latter disappeared from the galaxy in 30,000 BBY.[1] Evidence pointed to the Celestials having used[3] the Cosmic Turbine[6] and its fellow devices to construct the Vultar system,[3] including its planets.[2]

Vultar-TEA

The Dark Jedi activation of the Cosmic Turbine led to the destruction of the Vultar system.

In 4250 BBY,[2] after a group of Dark Jedi were driven from[3] the galactic capital world[1] Coruscant during the Third Great Schism, they took up residence in the Vultar system. The dark side adherents discovered the Celestial machinery there, in the process giving the Cosmic Turbine its name. Seeking revenge against their Jedi Order foes[3] and intending to unleash as much destruction as possible,[7] the Dark Jedi activated the Cosmic Turbine and the rest of the devices, but control over the machines proved to be far beyond their abilities. Several days into the darksiders' attempt to use the technology, a catastrophic accident[3] that came to be known as the Vultar Cataclysm[2] destroyed the entire Vultar system, including the Dark Jedi and the machines themselves.[3]

The event came to be chronicled in Galactic Republic records, and by the time of the reign of[5] the Republic's successor,[1] the Galactic Empire, the Obroan Institute for Archaeology Pre-Republic era specialist Doctor Insmot Bowen suspected that the Cosmic Turbine had been of Celestial origin. In 1 BBY, Imperial authorities debriefed Bowen on the Celestials. When General Arhul Kurumenga inquired during the briefing as to whether the Celestials had used the Cosmic Turbine—which the general erroneously referred to as the "Galactic Engine"—to construct the Corellian system, the researcher pointed it out as a possibility, further speculating that the artifact could have been a part of a network of similar, hyperspace tractor beam–equipped devices that Bowen referred to as "Turbines" and that most of the rest of those machines either had been dismantled, destroyed, or remained undiscovered in the Unknown Regions.[5] The Cosmic Turbine was also mentioned in a document by the Historical Council of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Cosmic Turbine was first mentioned in the 2005 reference book The New Essential Chronology by Daniel Wallace and Kevin J. Anderson.[2] It was originally meant to be mentioned in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the section that would have mentioned the artifact was cut before the book's release. The information regarding the Cosmic Turbine was later released in 2013 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and Del Rey editor Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from The Essential Guide to Warfare.[5]
