- "They told us to fire on civilians. We wouldn't do it. We laid our weapons down."
- ―Jannah, formerly designated TZ-1719
Company 77 was a company of former stormtroopers that mutinied and defected from the First Order after being ordered to fire on innocent civilians during the Battle of Ansett Island. Following their defiance of the First Order, Company 77 settled on Kef Bir, an oceanic moon of the planet Endor and the site of the wreckage of the second Death Star. On Kef Bir, the group tamed a wild orbak herd as mounts and used both their stormtrooper equipment and old Imperial weapons from the Death Star that washed up on the shore to arm themselves and survive on the wild moon.
After living peaceful years on Kef Bir, the YT-1300 light freighter Millennium Falcon arrived on the moon in 35 ABY carrying news of the First Order's expanding power. Inspired in the example of Finn, himself a former stormtrooper once known as FN-2187 who now fought against them with Leia Organa's Resistance, Company 77 saw the opportunity to fight back. They allied with the Resistance, bringing along their orbak mounts and participated in a key ground assault in the Battle of Exegol.
History[]
Company 77 was a training unit of stormtroopers that served the First Order and was made up mainly of young teenagers. During their training, the company took part in the Battle of Ansett Island, where they were ordered by command to fire their weapons on innocent civilians. Refusing to carry out the massacre, the entire company mutinied,[1] laid down their weapons, and defected from the First Order. They commandeered the First Order Cruiser they were assigned to, and landed it on the moon of Kef Bir, where the Company stayed at for some time. Over time they began stripping the cruiser of parts.[2]
Organization[]
Within the First Order, Company 77 was subject to the command of leaders who ordered them to fire on civilians. The company had squad and platoon leaders, all of whom rallied together to the defy the First Order. After the mutiny, the stormtrooper TZ-1719, who renamed herself Jannah, rose through the ranks to lead the company due to her talent as a warrior and leader. Under Jannah were lieutenants and sergeant majors for whom she crafted bows to denote their leadership role. Forten, formerly designated JL-4410, was the lead groom responsible for tending to the group's orbak contingent.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Company 77 first appeared in the 2019 Star Wars film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.[2] They were first mentioned, albeit unidentified, in the 2019 books Resistance Heroes by Michael Siglain,[3] Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Book and Magnetic Playset[4] by Sally Little,[5] Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Amazing Sticker Adventures by David Fentiman,[6] and Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition.[7] They were first identified as Company 77 in the 2019 reference books Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo[1] and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Galactic Guide by Matt Jones.[8]
According to co-writer Chris Terrio, the name Company 77 was a reference to Order 66 and the year 1977. According to Glyn Dillon, Company 77 surviving by scavenging Death Star parts was a thematic reference to Rey surviving as a scavenger in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[9]
