A catalyst reactant cradle, also simply known as a reactant cradle, is a piece of technology that was often found at salvage yards such as Niima Outpost on the desert planet Jakku, where it could be cleaned and sold by scavengers. The cradle's sheath could be made of quadanium steel,[1] a metal used in the construction of ships.[2] However, in the event of a wrecked starship, reactant cradles were not easily salvageable, with many scavengers opting to attempt to restore more useful scrap pieces.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Catalyst reactant cradles first appeared in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, although they were not identified as such until Pablo Hidalgo's reference title, Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, published on December 18, 2015 to complement the release of the film the same day. In the 2019 reference book, Star Wars: How Not to Get Eaten by Ewoks and Other Galactic Survival Skills, author Christian Blauvelt identified the device as merely a "reactant cradle."
