Biography[]

Soulcalibur VI[]

It is difficult to survive this turbulent world, especially if one grows straight without refraction. Hwang Seong-gyeong, an orphan taken in by the legendary swordsman Seong Han-myeong - renowned as a god of war, grew up to become one of the strongest, and most-selfless people in Korea. There is no doubt that the introduction to the Naruya style dojo and the mastery of swordsmanship helped. It was not only in the sword technique but also in the personality that was found in the swordsman Seong Han-myeong. Raised alongside Han-myeong's daughter Seong Mi-na, Hwang came to regard her as a sister.

When the news came that Japan, a neighboring country across the sea, was being unified, fears of a potential invasion rose across Korea. Shortly after, young people volunteered to serve in the military under Lee Seung-shin, the general of the Navy, and gathered to secure the coastline - Hwang among them. but some of them were fans. At that time, rumors of a "Sword of Salvation" called Soul Edge emerged from far west. The country was hopeful, and the King gave the promising young man a task to explore seek out the Sword of Salvation to confirm the truth of the rumors. When Mi-na secretly left home to search for the Sword of Salvation herself, Hwang set out to both fulfill his mission and return Mi-na home.

A few years later, Hwang returned home with Mi-na, disquieted after having discovered that Soul Edge was not a "sword of salvation" but rather a "sword of destruction" that would bring calamity to their country. After returning from a second quest to locate Soul Edge in 1588, Hwang met with Han-myeong and was surprised to learn that Mi-na had begun to receive marriage proposals from prospective suitors. Learning about an organization called the "Society of Salvation" - which was growing in popularity and political influence among the people of western Korea and sought to inflame tensions between Westerners and Easterners into a civil war. Hwang was urged by Han-myeong to not let his strong sense of justice make him reckless, and learned from Mi-na that the leader of the Society of Salvation was a man named Won Gabok and that the Society of Salvation was using a medium and "jewels" connected to Soul Edge in order to aid followers in their quest to locate it. Reminded of the Qualifiers he had encountered during his travels, Hwang decided to infiltrate one of the Society of Salvation's meetings after encountering a mysterious white-haired girl called Acht, who encouraged him to do so.

Disguising himself, Hwang snuck into a meeting of the Society of Salvation and discovered that Acht was the Society's touted medium and that the so-called jewels were actually shards of Soul Edge. Exposed, Hwang cut down the Malfested members of the cult and confronted Won Gabok, but was defeated by the powerful Malfested and infected with Soul Edge's power. Transforming into a Malfested, Hwang impaled himself on his own sword when Gabok sadistically suggested sending him to kill the people of the Seong Dojang - particularly Mi-na.

Hwang awakened three months later, somehow still alive but severely injured, at the Motien Pass in Manchuria, in the care of Won Soo-hyun - a powerful Taoist monk who had once worked for the Korean government as a Secret Royal Inspector. Soo-hyun informed Hwang that the shards of Soul Edge used by the Society of Salvation were the same ones he had brought back from his first expedition, recruiting him to travel the world hunting fragments of Soul Edge in her stead and teaching him how to use Taoist magic - though she warned him that overuse could kill him. In exchange for his service, Soo-hyun promised to use the divine Mirror of Evil's Bane in order to cure his Malfestation. After months of rigorous training, Hwang departed the Motien Pass equipped with a mystical sword and powerful talismans, disguised to keep word of his survival a secret.

Arriving in Eastern Europe, Hwang infiltrated a hidden temple of Fygul Cestemus - coming into conflict with Wilhelm von Krone of the Aval Organization when the latter attacked the Temple and assumed he was a cultist. Upon clarifying the misunderstanding, Hwang learned that Soo-hyun was an old ally of the Aval Organization and exchanged information with them. Hearing that Malfested were gathering at Ostrheinsburg Castle, Hwang set out to investigate despite the danger of succumbing to his curse and joining their ranks. En route to the castle, Hwang encountered Siegfried Schtauffen, who asked him to rescue hostages taken by the Malfested and provided him with a map. Infiltrating the castle, Hwang managed to rescue the captives but was ambushed by Johan Dürer - who he recognized from his prior expeditions and was outraged to discover was one of the leaders of the Malfested - codenamed Greatblade. Dürer informed Hwang that Soul Edge's servants were seeking to sow chaos worldwide in order to accumulate enough strong souls to restore the cursed blade, and that Siegfried was actually the wielder of Soul Edge and king of the Malfested. Hwang defeated Dürer in a duel and was allowed to leave, returning to the Aval Organization and sharing this intel.

Contacted by Soo-hyun and learning that the Society of Salvation was planning an attack on Seong Dojang, Hwang was taken to meet the Conduit, who opened an Astral Fissure to enable him to return to Korea. Warned of the dangers of Astral Chaos, Hwang nonetheless ventured inside out of determination to save Mi-na and Han-myeong. Arriving too late to stop the attack, Hwang rescued Mi-na and Han-myeong from Gabok but succumbed to his overuse of the talismans. Powerless to stop Gabok and Acht from setting out to the Motien Pass, Hwang was saved by Mi-na, who shared her life-force with him. Arriving in time to stop Gabok from claiming the shards of Soul Edge he'd gathered and destroying the Mirror of Evil's Bane, Hwang battled the Malfested monk and knocked him into the Mirror of Evil's Bane. With Gabok and Acht forced to retreat, Hwang was nominated Soo-hyun's successor as the Secret Royal Inspector and sent to dismantle the Society of Salvation, their allies and pawns, and other threats to Korea's stability.

Dark Thunder[]

Upon the Motien peaks where the energy from the heavens and earth flows freely, this black sword has bathed in the power of the cosmos for over three thousand days. It was gifted to Hwang by Won Soo-hyun, master of the Taoist traditions of the Six Heavenly Arts. The power within the blade both stabilizes and boosts the effects of Hwang's talismans.

It is also connected to the power within the celestial artifacts that Soo-hyun possesses, allowing Hwang to use the Sword of Cleansing Flame and the Chains of Binding even when he is far away from Motien Pass. These artifacts are weapons and tools linked to the celestial beings of legend. Most of them are the imaginings of writers and poets, but there are a few authentic tools in the hands of Taoist monks and immortals living secluded from earthly society. Though the power of these genuine artifacts is limited, they can exhibit supernatural effects beyond mortal comprehension.

The Sword of Cleansing Flame is a flaming blade that burns away the chi of any person it touches, while the Chains of Binding can grab hold and bind the shadow of those it touches. Both are powerful secret techniques of the Six Heavenly Arts, but when combined with Hwang Seong-gyong's longsword skill, their effectiveness grows exponentially.

While Dark Thunder is a ceremonial blade that can manifest the powers of these incredible artifacts, it is also a formidable weapon in its own right. No doubt it will make a fitting companion to Hwang's swordsmanship.

Hwang Style Longsword & Six Heavenly Arts[]

Trained in the Seong-style longsword under the "warrior god" Seong Han-myeong, Hwang continued to hone his skills. Over the course of many battles, his techniques developed into a unique style, and with his master's encouragement, he decided to name it Hwang-style longsword. This style makes use of his jumping power to the fullest, with several flying sword slashes and graceful kicking techniques that recall the image of a phoenix dancing in the sky.

After coming into contact with even greater evil, Hwang was soon to obtain a new kind of power: the secret arts of the Six Heavenly Arts, passed down to him from the former secret royal inspector Won Soo-hyun. Since he was not born with the bones of destiny and thus cannot become an immortal, he does not have a natural talent for Taoist sorcery, but his exceptional strength, muscle, and willpower as a warrior has allowed him to somewhat control divine power—a rare talent that even Soo-hyun finds remarkable.

The Six Heavenly Arts rests its beliefs upon the six mystical essences acquired by breathing in the exhalations of the Zi Wei Emperor of the North Star, ruler of all celestial beings. The six essences are: talisman magic, demon sealing, prayer rituals, herbal medicine, divination, and divine invocation. Hwang learned two of these: talisman magic and divine invocation. Combined with his extraordinary longsword skills, these powers make him a one-of-a-kind fighter—perhaps the world's only Taoist swordsman.

Critical Edge[]

Hwang's Purifying Blade: He slashes his sword down. If connected, he knocks his opponent upward and uses his talismans to conjure rings. He throws her blade and jump kicks as he flies through the rings. As his blade pierces the opponent, he pierces it even further with his foot and goes through his opponent.

If his opponent's HP is low and he lands the Critical Edge, the triumphant music will play and the background turns white, rather than red, and the kanji signs turn black and glows yellow.
