Synopsis
I was scared to lose your light. I was scared that the peace you built would crumble... But my ideas and that device were nothing more than ways to keep the status quo. Even though the future, and hope, were right in front of me. I didnā€™t notice them...
David Shield to All Might in Two Heroes

David Shield (ćƒ‡ćƒ“ć‚£ćƒƒćƒˆćƒ»ć‚·ćƒ¼ćƒ«ćƒ‰ Devitto ShÄ«rudo?) is a former sidekick and a scientist who creates support items for heroes. He is the father of Melissa Shield.

Appearance[]

David is a tall man of an average build with aqua eyes and light brown hair. He has light wrinkles on his face from age. His hair is short and messy with two prominent tufts for bangs, and he has a short goatee. He wears wide-rimmed, square glasses, a blue button-up, pale pants, a dark belt with a metal buckle, and navy sneakers with a red accent and light soles. On his left arm, he also wears a dark watch along with a wedding ring.

When he was younger, he had slicked-back, shoulder-length hair with a loose strand hanging over the side of his face, no facial hair, and no notable wrinkles. He wore a crimson hoodie, with its hood left out over the white lab coat he wore on top. He also wore dark pants and black sneakers with white soles and laces.

Personality[]

Like All Might, David is a generally compassionate and altruistic individual, always looking to create new ways to better society as a whole and help those in need. While having a relatively weak Quirk that is unsuitable for being a Pro Hero, he instead chooses to help heroes by designing costumes and inventing support gear. He also cares greatly about his daughter, Melissa, as he loves her dearly and showed himself to be incredibly supportive of her even after learning she was Quirkless.

All Might thanks Dave

David helps All Might to a private space so he can revert to his true form.

David greatly treasures his friendship with All Might, being positively elated to be reunited with him after several years and holds the Number 1 Hero in extremely high regard. Having been his sidekick and costume developer, he was also made aware of All Mightā€™s injury following his fight with All For One and had knowledge of his true form, although he was not informed on the truth regarding his Quirk, which All Might withheld from him in fear for his safety.

However, David's admiration of All Might almost fell into the realm of blind worship. When he discovered that All Might was gradually losing his strength and would eventually have to retire, he refused to accept this and was more than willing to use illegal means to restore his friend's powers, though not to the point where it would endanger people's lives. He was willing to hire a group of "fake villains" to cause a siege in the I-Island Tower, using it as a cover to steal his Quirk Amplification Device back from the towerā€™s security vaults. After being found out by Melissa and Izuku Midoriya, David was willing to face whatever punishment he would earn, as long as he could give the device to All Might to restore his fading Quirk.

Despite being betrayed by his friend and assistant Samuel Abraham, who hired real villains and intended to sell the device to Wolfram, David still jumped and took a bullet to save his friendā€™s life, further demonstrating his selfless nature. He even told Izuku to forget about him upon having his device stolen and being kidnapped by Wolfram, and was shocked by the U.A. High School student's determination to save him, despite what he had done. In the end, David was able to accept that All Might's time as a hero was ending, but that Izuku and the future generation of heroes will carry on his legacy, just as Melissa intends to do for him.

Abilities[]

Engineering: David is a genius inventor who specializes in making hero costumes and support gadgets. He was even able to create a Quirk Amplification Device that he believed would be able to restore the injured All Might to the strength he had when he was in his prime. When Wolfram used the Quirk Amplification Device, he became strong enough to be able to fight on equal footing with the weakened All Might and Izuku working together, decimating I-Island in the process.

Quirk[]

Squirmy Fingers (ćć«ć‚ƒćć«ć‚ƒęŒ‡ (ć‚†ć³) Gunya gunya Yubi?): David's Quirk allows him to bend his fingers farther than a person normally can. He uses this power to do precision work tinkering on the inventions and hero costumes he creates.[1]

Trivia[]

  • David Shield shares his birthday with Mitsuki Bakugo and Sidero.
  • His young Japanese voice actor, Ryōhei Kimura, also voices Romero Fujimi.
  • David's Quirk was created by Yoco Akiyama for the Melissa one-shot, as it did not appear in Two Heroes.[2]
  • "Shield of David" is the Hebrew term for Star of David. David's civilian uniform is also colored blue and white, the colors of the symbol.
  • According to Izuku, David is one of the world's top scientific minds and had won a Nobel Quirk Prize.
  • Ironically, David not knowing the truth about One For All would lead to his misdeeds. He would not have made a desperate attempt to restore All Might's Quirk had he known that he didn't have it anymore and had passed it on to Izuku.
