—Rambo in Mortal Kombat 11

John James Rambo, better known simply as Rambo, known for the film franchise of the same name, is a playable guest character in Mortal Kombat 11.

Rambo made his debut as DLC as part of the Kombat Pack 2.

About Rambo

John Rambo is the titular protagonist of the Rambo film series and has appeared in every film beginning with First Blood in 1982. He is a highly trained former Green Beret as a member of a SOG brigade. Having fought in Vietnam and suffering heavy torture at the hands of enemy troops, Rambo was discharged from the military, only to struggle with readjusting to the civilian life, something difficult due to his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Appearance

Rambo's appearance varies depending on what Kosmetic Outfit is selected, with his appearances taking inspiration from his original movies in the Rambo franchise.

Rambo's primary appearance is directly taken from Rambo III, where he sports an all-black outfit consisting of a tank top, grey cargo pants, leather belt, combat boots, bandana and a watch. This appearance can also be changed from the original color scheme to various other colors due to customization options.

Rambo has an outfit choice that is from his first movie, First Blood. Rambo wears a white tank top with blue jeans, a black leather belt and black boots. Most notably, he wears a brown poncho over these clothes.

His third outfit choice is also taken from the first movie of his respective franchise. Rambo is equipped with the well known M-1965 field jacket in olive green color and wears a blue pair of jeans.

His fourth outfit choice is from Rambo: First Blood Part II. Rambo's torso is bare with the late Co Bao's Buddha amulet pendant, and he wears grey cargo pants and black combat boots.

Biography

  • Mortal Kombat 11: "John J. Rambo is a former United States Special Forces soldier deeply haunted by his time in Vietnam. He is rough, aggressive and is well known for entering exceptionally dangerous situations alone. Rambo has reactivated his ruthless fighting skills to infiltrate the MK Universe.

Combat Characteristics

Power and Abilities

Since he is a human, Rambo does not have any supernatural abilities, but instead uses a small arsenal of deadly weapons that are extremely dangerous in the hands of an experienced war veteran. Combined with his extensive knowledge in guerilla warfare, he is a force to be reckoned with. His weapons include a compound bow that he uses to fire arrows with interchangeable arrowheads, a survival knife armed with two different and deadly edges, and the legendary M60 machine gun with its impressive firepower and long range accuracy.

His true power lies in his skill with guerilla warfare. As a master of the technique, Rambo has learned how to use his training and resourcefulness to confront enemies. He can improvise weapons from natural resources to craft hidden traps to kill or injure opponents and effectively use evasive maneuvers such as army crawling and side dashes, allowing him to dodge ranged and melee attacks. Rambo is also a skilled martial artist and knife fighter which makes him dangerous in close quarter combat.

Signature Moves

  • Hunting Bow: Rambo pulls out his compound bow, entering a stance that allows him to use different attacks. Performing the attack automatically makes Rambo fire an arrow at the opponent, and repeating this allows him to fire three arrows in total for increased damage. This attack is considered a projectile and can miss ducking opponents, even if they are blocking. (MK11)
    • Cancel Hunting Bow Stance: Rambo simply puts his compound bow back on his back. Unlike some abilities, this does not require Meter to cancel.
    • Delay: Rambo keeps his bow drawn and can delay whenever he fires a shot.
    • Shoot Arrow Release: Rambo simply fires an arrow after delaying, then puts his compound bow away.
  • Savage Slide: Rambo slides across the ground, kicking out the opponent's leg, knocking them to the ground. Rambo can perform other versions of this attack based on an input; (MK11)
    • Extend: Rambo performs Savage Slide, however the distance of his slide is increased, reaching almost full-screen distance.
    • Roll Back: After performing Savage Slide, Rambo can roll backwards away from his opponent. This can be performed regardless if the opponent blocks the attack or not. The opponent can still attack Rambo while he rolls away if timed correctly.
      • Amplifying the attack has Rambo elbow the opponent in the face after knocking them down, dealing increased damage. Rambo performs a Roll Back after performing the amplified version.
        • If Rambo successfully lands three amplified Savage Slides, the attack can turn into a Krushing Blow on the attack's third usage or any time after, with the elbow to the face shattering the top of the opponent's skull, dealing slightly over double the original damage.
  • Whip Trap: Rambo crouches down, cutting a line to a small spiked log on the fightline that strikes the opponent's shins, knocking them off their feet and away from Rambo. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Far Whip Trap, respectively. This attack is considered a projectile, however it can not be parried by attacks that have projectile parry properties, with the exception of RoboCop's Riot Shield. When utilizing this attack, Rambo can dodge projectiles when timed correctly. (MK11)
  • Artillery Strike: Rambo tosses a smoke grenade onto the fightline and after a moment, an airstrike strikes the fightline, knocking the opponent away almost full-screen distance if successful. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Close/Far Artillery Strike. This attack is considered a projectile. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Claymore: Rambo places a claymore mine on the fightline in front of himself. If Rambo or his opponent walk towards the mine, it will explode, causing unblockable damage to either fighter and launching either fighter into the air for a juggle. If neither fighter approach the claymore, it will explode on its own after some time. If Rambo is attacked just before he places the mine into the ground, it will not be planted. Rambo can only place one claymore at a time and must wait a moment after the mine explodes to place a new one. This ability conflicts with Snare Trap, disabling the option to select Snare Trap. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Rambo hide the claymore, hiding its location from both fighters. The damage output remains the same.
  • Hidden M60: Rambo grabs a hidden M60 light machine gun from a brush and unloads a barrage of gunfire onto the opponent, knocking them away almost full-screen distance. This attack is considered a projectile. This ability replaces Hunting Bow when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Rambo pull out two M60s instead of one, unloading even more gunfire onto the opponent, dealing almost double the original damage and knocking the opponent away full-screen distance.
  • Snare Trap: Rambo pulls on a hidden rope, snagging the opponent by the feet and dangling them upside down before cutting the rope, dropping them headfirst onto the ground to deal damage. This attack is considered a projectile. If Rambo is attacked just before he cuts the rope, there is a chance the opponent will be affected by hitstun, allowing Rambo to attack the opponent as if they were stunned in the amplified version of this attack. This ability conflicts with Claymore, disabling the option to select Claymore and requires two ability slots when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack does not have Rambo cut the rope, instead leaving the opponent dangling in the air, setting them up for a free hit. If Rambo does not attack the opponent, they will fall to the ground like the original. This version of the attack deals less damage than the original at the expense of the stun effect.
  • FUBAR: Rambo grabs his opponent, placing them over his knee and stabs them twice in the stomach before tossing them to the opposite side. This attack is capable of striking an opponent during a Getup Roll, similar to a standard Throw. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Rambo slice the opponent across the waist after the first two stabs, dealing increased damage. Rambo is give the option to not toss the opponent on the opposite side, however the attack deals slightly less damage if done this way.
      • If the attack is performed on an opponent who is using a Getup Roll, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Rambo slices the opponent's waist, the blade eviscerates their abdomen, dealing over double the original damage and causing massive damage-over-time. Rambo can still choose not to toss the opponent in the opposite direction, which will again cause this to deal slightly less damage.
  • Leopard Krawl: Rambo goes prone, entering a stance. While in this stance Rambo can use various attacks and can dodge many attacks while on the ground, however he is still susceptible to Low attacks and trap-based attacks. Rambo can crawl almost the entirely of the arena when performing this attack. This ability replaces Savage Slide when equipped and conflicts with Shoulder Roll, disabling the option to select Shoulder Roll. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Krawl Forward: Rambo advances towards the opponent while prone.
      • Cancel Krawl: Rambo immediately stands back up. Unlike some abilities, this does not require Meter to cancel.
    • Quick Slash: While prone, Rambo quickly slashes his opponents shin.
    • Sneak Attack: While prone, Rambo grabs the opponent's leg, slashes their ankle before stabbing them in the stomach, picking them up by the blade then punching them in the face, knocking them away. This attack is considered a Throw and is unblockable. This attack is capable of striking an opponent during a Getup Roll, similar to a standard Throw.
    • Parry: While prone, Rambo enters a crouch and raises his hands, where he parries all basic attacks, Getup or Flawless Block Attacks and special attacks, with the exception of projectiles and Fatal Blows. If Rambo successfully parries any of these attacks, with the exception of projectiles and Fatal Blows, Rambo counter by performing Sneak Attack, however this deals slightly less damage.
      • If Rambo crawls a far distance then successfully performs either Sneak Attack or Parry, either attack will turn into a Krushing Blow, with the punch to the face crushing the upper part of the opponent's skull inward, dealing almost three times the original damage. This Krushing Blow can only be triggered by either of these conditions once during the match.
  • Shoulder Roll: Rambo rolls passed his opponent, rolling to their opposite side then slashes them with his bowie knife. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Far/Close Shoulder Roll, respectively. The far version of Shoulder Roll can reach the opponent full-screen distance. Rambo can cancel the attack before he slashes the opponent, where he simple rolls to the opposite side of the opponent. Cancelling the attack requires and spends a bar of Defensive Meter. This ability replaces Savage Slide when equipped and conflicts with Leopard Krawl, disabling the option to select Leopard Krawl. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Rambo strike the opponent with a quick overhead swing of his compound bow, dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent to the ground. Rambo is much more safe when this version of the attack is blocked by the opponent.
      • If this attack is performed on the opponent as a Kounter or Punish, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Rambo slashes the opponent's abdomen, it eviscerates their abdomen, dealing increased damage and briefly stunning the opponent, allowing for Rambo to continue combos.
  • M.R.E.: Rambo quickly stabs a large insect crawling across the ground and eats part of it, restoring 6% health. Consecutively performing this attack reduces the health restored, and performing the attack too many times in a row and too fast will cause Rambo to vomit, leaving him vulnerable to the opponent. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • If Rambo's Fatal Blow is on cooldown after failing to connect or Rambo has recently thrown up from using M.R.E., the next time he performs the attack, it will turn into a Krushing Blow, where he takes a much larger bite from the insect, restoring almost four times the original health. This Krushing Blow can only be triggered by either of these conditions once during the match.
  • Mace Trap: Rambo crouches down and releases a hidden hanging rock with spikes around it to strike the opponent, knocking them nearly full-screen distance away. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Far Mace Trap, respectively. The far version of Mace Trap can reach full-screen distance. This attack is considered a projectile, however it can not be parried by projectile parry attacks. This ability replaces Whip Trap when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack send a larger, faster moving log towards the opponent for increased damage and knocking the opponent away full-screen distance.
      • If Rambo successfully lands Mace Trap three times in a row, amplifying Mace Trap for a third time or after the third time turns the attack into a Krushing Blow, with the log damaging the opponent's organs, dealing almost three times the original damage and knocking the opponent away full-screen distance almost instantly.

Fatal Blow

  • Lone Wolf: Rambo hits and stuns his opponent with his bow before rolling towards them, stabbing their thigh, slashing at their neck, and impaling their gut with his knife. He then lifts his opponent with the knife still in them, takes an explosive arrow from his quiver and stabs it through their chin, with the arrowhead exiting through the cheek. Finally, he kicks them away and shoots the explosive arrow at them. (MK11)

Other Moves

  • Throw (Forward): Rambo slashes the opponent across the chest and the stomach with his knife, drives the knife into their gut and violently pulls it out, making them turn around, before stabbing them in the back, lifting them up and dislodging the weapon, dropping the opponent to the ground. (MK11)
    • If Rambo hasn't been knocked down or performed a jump for 10 seconds, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Rambo slashes the opponent's gut, eviscerating their stomach, dealing slightly less damage however causing massive damage-over-time and stunning the opponent, setting them up for a free hit.
  • Throw (Backward): Rambo switches sides with the opponent, slashes their throat with his knife, knocking them down into a pitfall trap camouflaged by leaves, and tosses a grenade in, blowing them out of the pit. (MK11)
  • First Blood: Rambo punches the opponent in the face then the stomach. This combo has follow-up attacks, however these follow-up attacks cannot be performed if First Blood is Flawless Blocked by the opponent. (MK11)
    • The Last One: Rambo uppercuts the opponent into the air for a juggle. Rambo is completely vulnerable if this combo is blocked by the opponent.
  • Commando: Rambo gains new Combo-Enders to some of his combos; (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Don't Push It: After performing Mad Minute, Rambo grabs the opponent, pulls them in then throws them to the ground. This final grab acts as a High Throw and is unblockable, however it can miss ducking opponents. This final grab is capable of striking an opponent during a Getup Roll, similar to a standard Throw.
    • Expendable: After performing First Blood, Rambo grabs the opponent and throws them over his shoulder into the opposite direction. This final grab acts as a High Throw and is unblockable, however it can miss ducking opponents. This final grab is capable of striking an opponent during a Getup Roll, similar to a standard Throw. As stated above, this combo can not be performed if First Blood is Flawless Blocked by the opponent.
    • Nothing Is Over: After performing his Recon Kick basic attack, Rambo stabs the opponent five consecutive times in the stomach with the final stab causing the opponent to stumble backwards. Rambo recovers slightly faster than the opponent if this combo successfully hits. Unlike the previous attacks, this final stab is not a Throw and can be blocked by the opponent.
  • Lieutenant Drop: Rambo performs a drop kick, knocking the opponent full-screen distance away. This attack has armor breaking properties, ignoring the armor granted by specific abilities and Fatal Blows. (MK11)
    • If Rambo hits the opponent with this attack twice in a row or breaks armor, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the drop kick damaging the opponent's lower organs, dealing almost three times the original damage.

Fatalities

  • Straight To Valhalla: Rambo throws his knife into the opponent's shoulder, causing them to stumble onto a wire connected to a trap covered by leaves. The trap springs up to reveal bamboo spikes which impales the opponent and keeps them still. Rambo then walks up behind them and jabs his fingers into the opponent's throat before he tears their neck open with his hand, ripping out their windpipe and larynx. (MK11)
  • Parilla Thrilla: Rambo wraps an ammo belt around his opponent's waist and kicks them onto a bed frame that is being electrified by a generator. While the opponent is being electrocuted, the bullets immediately start to fly into or away from their body, which then sparks a small explosion, causing their lower half to detach from them. Rambo then plunges his knife into their chin and pulls the knife through their face, splitting it in two. (MK11)

Brutalities

  • The Klassic: Rambo performs his uppercut, decapitating the opponent with an upward stab from his knife with their spine still attached. (MK11)
  • Silenced: Rambo performs his Throw (Forward) only this time after stabbing the opponent in the back, Rambo slits their throat. (MK11)
  • Target Practice: Rambo performs a Snare Trap, snagging the opponent into the air and shooting eight consecutive arrows at them while offscreen. As Rambo performs his Brutality Victory Pose, their body falls into frame, with the arrows protruding from their lifeless body. (MK11)
  • Splitting Headache: Rambo performs his Nothing Is Over combo, after which he stabs the opponent in the mouth and pulls the blade upwards, splitting the opponent's head in two. (MK11)
  • Watch Your Step: Rambo performs a Claymore, where all of the opponent's limbs fly off due to the explosion, leaving only a charred and on fire, upright torso. (MK11)
  • Spray and Pray: Rambo performs an amplified Hidden M60, with the barrage of gunfire destroying the opponent's torso, only for them to fall forward, with Rambo blowing their head off in the process. (MK11)
  • Stomach Pains: Rambo performs an amplified FUBAR, only this time, stabbing the opponent repeatedly before giving one final slash, cutting them clean in half. (MK11)
  • Buried Alive: Rambo performs his Throw (Backward), killing them instantly and burying them in pit with a shovel instead of it exploding. (MK11)
  • Target Destroyed: Rambo performs an Artillery Strike that destroys the opponent on impact. (MK11)
  • Bullseye: Rambo performs a Hunting Bow with the arrow piercing through the opponent's eye. (MK11)
  • Trapped: Rambo performs a Mace Trap, destroying the opponent's upperbody on impact. As their head falls to the ground, it gets impaled on the Mace Trap. (MK11)
  • Alternate Target Practice Brutality: Rambo performs his Target Practice Brutality with the opponent's head exploding at the end. (MK11 - Secret)

Ending

Mortal Kombat 11: "I didn't ask for this war. But once it started, I had to finish it. Hands down, Kronika was the toughest enemy I ever faced. All my tactics, my training, meant nothing against a god like her. In the end, it was a battle of wills. It never occured to me that for winning, I'd get her Hourglass. At first, I hoped to right every wrong in history. But then I figured out that doing it meant I'd have to decide the fates of billions. Picking who lives and who dies, for eternity? It was going to kill my soul. I'd end up no better than those old men who sent us off to war, not giving a shit about what would happen. And that's not the man I want to be. It's time to walk away, for good this time, leaving the pain and the ugliness behind. After all I've been through, I've earned a little peace."

Trivia

General

  • Rambo is played by Sylvester Stallone, reprising the role from the Rambo film franchise through voice and motion capture.
  • Rambo is the fourth guest character to not be a villain. The first was Kratos, the second was Spawn and the third being RoboCop.
    • He is, however, the second guest character to truly be a good character, after RoboCop, as Kratos is closer to anti-hero status while Spawn himself is an anti-hero.
      • The Terminator could possibly fall into this category, however the character's alignment in its origin franchise varies between films.
  • Rambo is the first human guest character to not be a villain.
    • He is also the third human guest character to not have been returned from the dead in one way or another, the first being Leatherface with the second being the Joker.
  • Rambo is the second guest character to have served in a branch of the United States Military, the first being Spawn before his death as Al Simmons.
  • Rambo is the sixth guest character in the series to not come from a horror film franchise, rather he originates from the action genre. The first was Kratos, the second being The Terminator, the third being The Joker, the fourth being Spawn and the fifth being RoboCop.
    • However, with the Terminator, the original film was intended to be sci-fi horror, however its sequels dropped this element in favor of being more action oriented.
  • One of his Brutality Victory Poses has a portal open to a forest path leading to the house in the 2008 film Rambo before he enters it.
  • Rambo's ending references the ending of 2008's Rambo, the fourth installment of the series, where he returns to his father's farm in Bowie, Arizona.

Mortal Kombat 11

  • Rambo is one of the few unique characters whose default projectile does not work like a traditional one. His default projectile is activated from a stance, much like Tremor and Jax in their MKX variations.
  • Rambo is the only character to have a Krushing Blow that does not deal damage to a character but instead affects an ability towards Rambo himself, this being his MRE ability.
  • The Terminator is the only character to not react with fear to Rambo's "Mission Accomplished" outro.
    • While Robocop does show fear, he has only a mild reaction, if compared with the rest of the roster, possibly due to being part machine.
  • Johnny Cage, Jacqui Briggs, Spawn, and Robocop are the only characters who ever refer to Rambo by his first name.
  • Besides Rain, Erron Black and Shao Kahn, Rambo is one of the few characters in Mortal Kombat 11 to have a Friendship that has a theme based on a recreational game.
  • Due to being voiced and modeled by Sylvester Stallone, Rambo's introductions, interactions and such have references to Stallone's other movie roles outside the Rambo franchise, such as Rocky, Over the Top, Cobra, Tango and Cash, Judge Dredd, Cliffhanger and The Expendables, similar to many of the guest characters in the series such as The Terminator and Arnold Schwarzenegger prior.
    • When interacting with Jax, Jax is impressed that Rambo took out an Outworld army by himself, saying "You got a gift for demolition, man.", a reference to the 1993 film Demolition Man.
    • When interacting with Cassie, she will say "Stop! Or my mom with shoot!", referencing the 1992 film of the same name.
    • When interacting with Erron Black, Black will suggest to Rambo "How about a bullet to the head to prove it?", referencing the 2012 film Bullet to the Head.
    • When interacting with Shao Kahn, Shao Kahn will ask to Rambo to join his "Night Hawks", a reference to the 1981 film Nighthawks.
      • Another interaction with Shao Kahn has Rambo fear the Emperor, to which Shao Kahn asks if Rambo "filled with dread" which Rambo says to not "judge him for it", a reference to the 1995 film Judge Dredd.
    • When interacting with the Joker, the clown makes references to the 1993 film Cliffhanger and the 1987 film Over The Top.
    • When interacting with Sindel, she will ask Rambo's "price to tango" to which he responds with "I fight for country, not cash", referencing the 1989 film Tango & Cash.
    • In a mirror match dialogue, Rambo will ask his other self if he is born in Bowie as well. The latter will reply that he is from Philly, a colloquial nickname of Philadelphia. This is the place where Robert "Rocky" Balboa was born in.
    • The first film in the Rambo series, First Blood, is referenced many times through intro dialogues. A few good examples can be seen below.
      • In an intro dialogue with RoboCop, he will bring up Rambo's crime of resisting arrest in response to Rambo questioning his arrest from RoboCop – A subtle reference to the first film where Sheriff Will Teasle (played by Brian Dennehy) unlawfully arrests him on charges of resisting arrest.
      • Sheeva asks a question for Rambo in a intro dialogue, "What possessed the gods to make a man like you?". The latter replies "They didn't make me, Trautman did." This is another reference to a line in the first film and refers to Col. Sam Trautman (played by Richard Crenna), Rambo's former commanding officer and one of the few who understand him.
      • Geras tells Rambo that his war with Sheriff Teasle was avoidable, referencing the events of the first movie.
      • Kotal Kahn tells Rambo "You will not draw first blood", while he replies "It's who draws last blood that matters". Those are references to the first and the fifth movies in the series.
      • Fujin makes a reference to a dramatic scene between Rambo and Trautman near the end of the film. He tells Rambo that he is "the last of an elite group" with Rambo replying that he won't stop fighting until it's over. Fujin angrily finishes saying "Do not end it like this!"
    • His birthplace in Bowie, Arizona is referenced in Rain's dialogue with Rambo. The former expresses to Rambo his desire to conquer it after he visits it.
    • Rambo's Navajo American heritage is mentioned in an intro dialogue with Nightwolf. The shaman questions Rambo sharing blood with his fellow Native Americans, which Rambo indirectly confirms by saying his father's side was one of them, while in the novels his mother was Navajo, while his father was French.
    • Johnny will question Rambo's familiarity to an actor that he claims to have seen on film. A subtle reference to the actor who plays him, Sylvester Stallone.
      • He will also ask Rambo to share his story for therapeutic reasons, but Rambo realizes that he is only using him and his experiences to make a movie out of it. Obviously, this is a reference to his origin franchise.
      • Simlar to when Sub Zero told Rambo he was the "Sly" one a reference to Sylvester Stallone's nickname.
    • All of his customizable cinematics are taken or inspired by the Rambo film series.
      • Blending In is a reference to his usage of wearable foliage as camouflage in the First Blood movie, where he assaults multiple police officers with stealth attacks.
      • Ready For War is a double reference to the scenes where he tightens his headband in Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III.
      • Close Inspection is a reference to multiple scenes where Rambo looks at his knife Rambo: First Blood Part II, the first one where he gears up and the second scene where he shows his knife to Co Bao.
      • Guns Blazing is a reference to the famous scene in Rambo: First Blood Part II where Rambo destroys Murdock's office with his M60 machine gun while howling at anger.
      • Bow Hunter is a reference to the Rambo versus Helicopter scene in the third film where he prepares to shoot down a Soviet attack helicopter using an explosive tipped arrow.
      • The final shot of the Airlift cinematic is a reference to the opening scene of the second film, showing a helicopter flying in a sky lit by an orange sun.
      • Mission Accomplished shares the same name with the quote that Rambo says in the cinematic. It is another reference to his second film where he pins down a terrified Marshall Murdock before tiringly uttering the phrase and plunges the knife inches away from his face.

Errors

  • When fighting Kronika in the game's Story Mode as Fire God Liu Kang or Shang Tsung, it is possible she will call upon Rambo to fight for her when using her Duplicate Fighter Ability despite him being a non-canon downloadable guest character. This can occur with every guest character.
  • There is a chance that when Rambo performs his alternate Brutality Victory Pose, he doesn't vanish through the portal, rather continuously walking in the background before freezing in place.
