The USS Protostar (NX-76884) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Protostar-class[1] starship and prototype of its class, in Starfleet service years before 2383. In the 2380s decade, the derelict ship was salvaged by a group of teenagers from Tars Lamora. (PRD episode: "Lost and Found")

Service history[]

Early service and loss[]

Captain Chakotay.

The Protostar was given an NX registry number and equipped with the emergency training hologram (ETH), modelled after Captain Kathryn Janeway. Hologram Janeway remained within the ship's databank when it disappeared in the Delta Quadrant. (PRD episode: "Lost and Found")

The ship's first crew was led by Captain Chakotay. The vessel encountered an anomaly and was boarded. Captain Chakotay issued a distress call. (PRD episode: "Kobayashi")

Drednok, future henchman of the Diviner, gained access to the bridge during the boarding action. (PRD episode: "First Con-tact")

The Protostar travelled into the past and arrived in the year 2366. The Diviner, operating from Tars Lamora, cloned himself to continue the search for the Protostar. His offspring became Gwyndala. (PRD episode: "Kobayashi")

Recovery and further service[]

Protostar promo

The Vau N'Akat individual known as the Diviner searched for the Protostar. It was found by two children trying to escape from the Diviner's prison colony on Tars Lamora in 2383. Dal R'El and Rok-Tahk found the ship lying in the Northwest Crevasse of the colony. During their attempt to launch it, the ship initially slipped away and fell down the crevasse.

Together with their prisoner, the Diviner's daughter Gwyn, Dal, Rok-Tahk and other prisoners escaped with the Protostar from Tars Lamora. While celebrating their escape, they accidentally reactivated the Janeway hologram (PRD episode: "Lost and Found")

Identified as Starfleet Academy cadets by Hologram Janeway, the crew was directed by the ETH to explore a class M planet in the Hirogen system. (PRD episode: "Dream Catcher")

They escaped being caught by the Diviner and his ship, the REV-12, when Gwyn formally switched sides and activated the protostar engine. (PRD episode: "Terror Firma")

With this engine, the Protostar traversed 4000 lightyears towards the Gamma Quadrant. They encountered DaiMon Nandi of the Damsel, who conned the crew and alerted the Diviner to their new location. (PRD episode: "First Con-tact")

Soon after, the Protostar became trapped in a tachyon storm, which caused time to flow at different speeds for the crew. The designated security officer Rok-Tahk spent a long time living alone on the ship, and studied the relevant science that helped pull the Protostar out of danger. Meanwhile, the Diviner had a copy of Drednok, Dred 2, assemble himself in the ship's vehicle replicator. (PRD episode: "Time Amok")

On stardate 61174.9, Dal and Gwyn encountered Drednok 2 on Orisi. After he beamed away, the Protostar set course for Mirios. (PRD video game: Supernova)

The Protostar was later destroyed by the crew in order to save Starfleet from the living construct weapon onboard. Hologram Janeway used the explosion to open a wormhole to where Chakotay was stranded in the future. (PRD episode: "Supernova")

Temporal Paradox[]

During an attempted rescue mission for Chakotay and Adreek-Hu -- the sole surviving members of the ship's original crew -- in the future, Dal and his crew accidentally interfered in the ship's temporal displacement into the past. As a result, Chakotay and Adreek escaped with through time with the Protostar, altering its destination so that it didn't arrive on Tars Lamora in the past. This resulted in a temporal paradox. (PRD episode: "Who Saves the Saviors")

With the help of Wesley Crusher, the crew and Maj'el eventually found the Protostar and Chakotay marooned on Ysida in the present. Chakotay revealed that he had ejected the ship's proto-core and antimatter supply before landing, leaving the ship running on emergency power cells recharged with solar collectors and unable to fly. Chakotay and Hologram Janeway explained that in this timeline, the Protostar arrived in 2374 where Chakotay and Adreek marooned it in order to protect the Federation from the living construct weapon onboard. Adreek subsequently vanished while testing out a theory on how to get more antimatter for the Protostar, further breaking Chakotay's already broken spirit.

Dal later found Adreek's body along with the antimatter that he had collected for the ship. His spirit reignited, Chakotay agreed to return to the Federation. The crew transformed the Protostar into a sailing ship in order to reach the deuterium gas that they needed for the ship and successfully restored the impulse engines and the warp drive, allowing the Protostar to finally leave Ysida. However, the USS Voyager-A was discovered to be 3,000 light years away, meaning that the ship would need a new proto-core before they could rendezvous. (PRD episode: "Last Flight of the Protostar")

The crew was able to collect bosonite and build a new proto-core. The Protostar successfully proto-warped to Voyager's location, but this tore the already weakened fabric of the universe, resulting in an interphasic rift consuming Voyager until it was sealed. (PRD episode: "Cracked Mirror")

After participating in the final battle with Asencia and her forces, the crew, with the help of Voyager and Wesley, launched the Protostar into a wormhole leading back to Tars Lamora in the past where it would eventually be found by Dal and Rok. This repaired the broken timeline and ended the temporal paradox that had been created. The Protostar was later replaced by the USS Prodigy, a new Protostar-class ship. (PRD episode: "Ouroboros")
