The original Voyager

"The USS Voyager. Ho! "J." That's–that's ten generations of evolution?"
"Eleven. Would love to hear those stories."
– Sylvia Tilly and Joann Owosekun, 3189 ("Die Trying")

The name Voyager had a longstanding history as a name for spacecraft, starting in the 20th century and lasting at least to the 32nd century.

History[]

In the 20th century, NASA launched a series of probes named Voyager, such as Voyager 6. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

The USS Voyager was an Intrepid-class starship. It was commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway, whose seven-year mission in the Delta Quadrant became legendary. Following its return from the Delta Quadrant, the ship was decommissioned. (Star Trek: Voyager; PIC: "The Star Gazer"; LD: "Twovix")

The USS Voyager (NCC-74656-A) was a Lamarr-class science vessel that was launched in 2384. Commanded by now-Vice Admiral Janeway on its maiden voyage, the new Voyager was refitted stem to stern with the latest and greatest technologies collected by the original Voyager in the Delta Quadrant "and then some." It was also equipped with a quantum slipstream drive. Following its maiden voyage, Captain Chakotay, the former first officer of the original Voyager, became the Voyager-A's new captain. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 2", "Into the Breach, Part I", "Ouroboros, Part II")

The USS Voyager (NCC-74656-B) was a Pathfinder-class starship active in the early 25th century. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

The USS Voyager (NCC-74656-J) was an Intrepid-class starship that was active during the late 32nd century. It was the first starship to be equipped with the Federation's new pathway drive. (DIS: "Die Trying", "Kobayashi Maru")

Alternate timeline and realities[]

Mirror universe[]

ISS Voyager (ISS-74656-A)

ISS Voyager (NCC-74656-A)

In the mirror universe, the ISS Voyager (NCC-74656-A) was a Lamarr-class starship under the command of Admiral Kathryn Janeway. (PRO: "Cracked Mirror")

Derivative ships[]

V'ger ship, remastered (2022)

V'ger (formerly Voyager 6)

Although Voyager 6 had started life as a deep space probe, it was rebuilt by a race of living machines into a massive ship after disappearing into what used to be called a black hole; though the original satellite still remained at the core of the vessel. On its three-century return voyage to Earth, it amassed so much knowledge that it achieved consciousness. By the 2270s the new lifeform called itself V'ger, itself derived from the remaining visible letters on the dedication plaque bearing its original name. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Silver Blood Voyager

USS Voyager Silver Blood replica

By 2375 the Silver Blood had created a replica of the USS Voyager (NCC-74656) with an enhanced warp drive that was, unfortunately, harmful to Silver Blood-derived matter. This caused the ship to degrade until its eventual destruction as the result of a warp core ejection. (VOY: "Course: Oblivion")

Appendices[]

Background information[]

In the real world, NASA has launched only two Voyager probes, both in 1977. (NASA mission overview)

A previous NASA program to send uncrewed probes to Mars was to have been called Voyager, but was canceled.

The idea to continue Voyager's legacy, first with the Voyager-J, came from Alex Kurtzman. (Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection Issue 13, pp. 8-14) Later, in the development of PRO Season 2, Dan and Kevin Hageman considered: "Voyager was a floating museum. So we're like, let's create a new one!" [1]
