A synthetic mind meld augment was a technology briefly but successfully experimented with by Paul Stamets in 2256. Stamets, who also referred to the process as "Sarek vision", described the idea as "Groovy".

At the time, ambassador Sarek's cruiser was stranded inside the Yridia Nebula as the result of sabotage. USS Discovery attempted rescue, but found itself without easy options to quickly locate the ship. Michael Burnham suggested the exploitation of a remote link she had with Sarek as the result of a katra "soul graft" Sarek had provided her with during an incident of her childhood.

Burnham had already made a connection to Sarek, and sensed that he was unconscious. Stamets managed to use a neural enhancer to boost Burnham's neural signals to reconnect with Sarek's katra, waking him up so he could activate his ship's transponder. Since radioactive interference from the nebula would diffuse the signal so that proximity was needed to achieve a strong enough connection, the connection was made from a shuttle that entered the nebula. (DIS: "Lethe")

The name Stamets suggested for the procedure might be considered a misnomer, as while the term mind meld was used aboard Discovery in connection to the process, in "Battle at the Binary Stars", Sarek described the unique form of connection between him and Burnham as "more then a mind meld".
