Star Trek Beyond Blu-ray Region B cover

Region B cover

Region B cover

Star Trek Beyond is the Blu-ray Disc release of Star Trek Beyond. The Region 1 North American release was a Blu-Ray/DVD/digital combo release, whereas other regions either dispensed with the DVD disc, or had an extra Blu-ray disc included with additional special features that were not included in the regular North American release. The Region B Australasian release only had the Blu-ray single disc version of the film. [4]

Special features[]

  • Deleted scenes
  • Beyond the Darkness
  • Enterprise Takedown
  • Divided and Conquered
  • A Warped Sense of Revenge
  • Trekking in the Desert
  • Exploring Strange New Worlds
  • New Life and New Civilizations
  • To Live Long and Prosper
  • For Leonard and Anton
  • Gag Reel

An extra Blu-ray disc, included as bonus in the retailer exclusives of the Target (in the US), Sainsbury's (in the UK), JB Hi-Fi (in Australia [5]), Saturn (in Germany/Benelux, being a Blu-ray only 2-disc SteelBook retailer exclusive and which – like the Sainsbury's and JB Hi-Fi releases – came without the DVD, [6] contrary to the US Target release) and FNAC (in France, and also a SteelBook release) retail chain stores. Some of these releases, such as the Target one, had the entirety of the special features split off onto their own separate Blu-ray disc.

The additional/bonus special features concerned,

  • Small World
  • The Battle of Yorktown
  • Properly Outfitted
  • Set Phasers to Stunning
  • Spliced
  • Beats and Shouting
  • Visually Effective
  • Rihanna Sledgehammer Music Video
  • Trailers

While the preceding two alternate reality films had in the form of their 2014 Star Trek: The Compendium release pursuant the second "VAM controversy", no "VAM controversy" has followed in the wake of the Beyond release, and as a result no complete regular home video version of this film was released in most territories until July 2019, when the Star Trek Trilogy: The Kelvin Timeline 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray saw the light of day.

In France however, manufacturer/distributor ESCD decided to spare their customers the frustration of a "VAM controversy" repeat performance, and already included the bonus disc as part of their regular, and therefore more readily available, December 2016 Region B Blu-ray release.

iTunes exclusive[]

An "enhanced commentary", similar to the one produced for the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray, was exclusively available at ITunes Store, and could be accessed by redeeming the digital code included in the two retailer exclusive sets, but not the regular one. [7] Unlike the Into Darkness one though, it was not physically included on any of the subsequent home video format releases, including the 2019 4K UHD one.

  1. Even though the set was originally announced as a Walmart retailer exclusive, [1] it was eventually not exclusive to that retailer alone, as it was in North America carried by several other retail chain stores as well, such as Amazon, Target and Best Buy.
  2. Something similar also applied for the European single-disc "Gift Set" variants, as it was in Germany and the Benelux carried by various retail chains such as Media Markt and Saturn. The two-disc Australian Gift Set on the other hand, was a JB Hi-Fi retailer exclusive.
  3. Originally announced as a 4K UHD/Blu-ray/digital Amazon.com gift set retailer exclusive, it was eventually released as such in North America. An European version had also been accounted for, but without the 4K UHD disc. [2] When eventually released in the UK, Germany and France, their sets included an extra Blu-ray 3D disc instead with the French set even including the additional Bonus Features disc that han not been part of the American set, and which were both omitted from the single-disc Italian release. [3]
  4. The "Jaylah" SteelBook was also sold in Italy as a "Limited Edition", with this difference that theirs concerned the Blu-ray/DVD combo instead of the Blu-ray/Bonus Features two-disc combo. A Blu-ray 3D/2D combo variant was sold in Germany/Netherlands as a Media Markt retailer exclusive. That release variant distinguished itself by sporting a black border on its cover.
  5. In both cases it concerned a 2-disc holding SteelBook, but there were differences in regard to which discs were included; the North American one (featuring the title in white font on the cover) contained the single Blu-ray and DVD version, whereas the German/Dutch one contained the two Blu-ray/Special Bonus discs combo. The same design was also used for the single-disc Italian SteelBook release.
