Inside the research station on Ventax II

For the computer console station for research purposes, please see science station.

A research station (also called a research facility, space laboratory, or science station) was a facility specializing in scientific research. Research stations could be space stations or surface facilities.

Research stations often performed scientific research that was too dangerous to conduct in populated areas. Some stations, like the Regula I Space Laboratory, also conducted highly classified research. In 2285, it was home of the research project for Project Genesis. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

One example of a surface research station was the Federation research station on the planet of Ventax II, some of whose personnel was taken hostage as the facility was overrun during a riot in a period of civil unrest on the planet in 2367. Given that this station was located in an inhabited area, its area of research was unlikely to be dangerous. (TNG: "Devil's Due")

Genetics were one field of science that had science facilities solely dedicated to its research. (ENT: "Divergence"; TNG: "Unnatural Selection")

The Jupiter Station Holoprogramming Center was a facility where Doctor Lewis Zimmerman conducted his work on holoprogramming. When he believed he was terminally ill, he wrote in his last will and testament that he requested that Starfleet keep the program for his holographic assistant, Haley, running for as long as the research facility existed. (VOY: "Life Line")
