Programmable matter controls

The controls of Booker's ship

Programmable matter was a substance used in the 32nd century. Consisting of minute nanomolecules, the matter had the abilities of redistributing and redesigning itself into pre-programmed shapes. Its antimatter counterpart was programmable antimatter.

Capable of reading bio-signs, the programmable matter was highly adaptive to a user. It learned and adjusted to the user's reflexes, creating interface styles that were unique to each individual. (DIS: "Scavengers")

As she played with the programmable matter for the first time, Lieutenant Joann Owosekun said, "Feels cool…and smooth. Like glass." (DIS: "Scavengers")

In 3188, at Aditya Sahil's station, the furniture in his bedroom and office and the container holding the Flag of the Federation were made from this matter.

Aboard Cleveland Booker's ship, the controls were made from this matter. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 1")

Programmable matter was also used by the inhabitants of The Colony in 3189. That was the first time Ensign Sylvia Tilly had seen it. (DIS: "Far From Home")

Programmable matter was installed into the USS Discovery's control surfaces as part of her refit in the 32nd century (DIS: "Scavengers") as well as the computer core. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")

Programmable matter was used to attach Discovery's detached warp nacelles when reconnected to the ship (DIS: "Scavengers") and when an explosion disrupted the fields holding the starboard warp nacelle in place, the matter reacted automatically to bridge the gap and physically pull the nacelle back to the ship. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")

This substance is identified and described by Property Master Mario Moreira in the aftershow TRR: "That Hope Is You, Part 1".
