At least 1,000 years prior to the 22nd century, a race of transdimensional beings constructed a series of massive spheres, each one of which generated massive amounts of gravimetric energy. In 2376, Reginald Barclay came up with the idea of directing a tachyon beam at a class B itinerant pulsar, with enough gravimetric energy to create an artificial wormhole, but his superiors thought it would be an abuse of the MIDAS array. Despite orders to the contrary, Barclay proved his theory and was able to contact USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant with this method. (VOY: "Pathfinder")
