Freecloud was an inhabited planet in the Alpha Doradus system. It contained a number of urban areas, including Stardust City, and hosted a diverse population. Spacecraft approaching Freecloud were subjected to aggressive, personalized holographic advertisements projected inside said craft. Dismissal of the advertisements required physical interaction with the holograms. Space traffic was handled by Freecloud Orbital Control.

Freecloud was a mecca for businesses of all kinds, due to its maximum-security commercial and information services, and minimal restrictions on personal liberties. Its welcome banner displayed the name prominently and included rolling dice. An interfacers' guild was present on the planet, and Bjayzl's base of operations was also located there. Sometime prior to 2380, the Exocomp Peanut Hamper wanted to become a dabo girl on Freecloud, but didn't succeed and chose a career in Starfleet instead. (LD: "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption")

Star Trek: Picard showrunner Michael Chabon described Freecloud as a "non-aligned Crypto Libertarian Pseudorepublic". [1]
On 29 January 2021, Chabon wrote a short piece on Freecloud titled "Some Notes on Freecloud" for his blog. In this piece, he stated that Freecloud, otherwise known as Alpha Doradus IV, was a Venus-sized, Class M planet orbiting the binary stars of the Alpha Doradus system. This system was located in the Iconia sector of the Beta Quadrant.
The planet had a 700-day Earth year. Its climate was considerably warmer than Earth's and it had lush vegetation.
This planet had a single large continental land mass named Panterra, which occupied one face of the planet in both the northern and southern hemispheres. This supercontinent had a million mile coastline that was largely mountainous. Where it was not mountainous, there were the mouths of the major rivers and the inlets of three large lakes or seas, the Yin, the Yang, and the Perfume Sea. The interior of the supercontinent was an arid or semi-arid lowland. This super continent was surrounded by a global ocean named Panpontine.
The planet was settled by a "schismatic group of Earth-descended Anarcho-Existentialists from the planet Silentum" in 2180. The initial settlements were located on the coastline. In 2201, a short five-sentence constitution was ratified, calling for universal service by all able-bodied citizens after they turned sixteen years of age in the Freecloud Defense Network.
The capital city of Freecloud was Stardust City, which was the largest city on the planet. [2]
