An analyst was an individual who analyzed and interpreted information in a particular field.
In 2268, when Spock addressed James T. Kirk's obsession with a dikironium cloud creature, which had begun to affect the function of the ship and crew, he pointed out that regardless of Kirk's past actions, he was not at fault for the creature's actions, it having killed his commanding officer at the time, Captain Garrovick. Kirk dismissed Spock's attempt to curb his guilt, stating "if you want to play analyst, Spock, use someone else, not me." (TOS: "Obsession")
