Captain Alonzo Vandermeer was a male Human Starfleet officer who lived during the late 24th century. At one point in his career, he served as first officer under Captain Marta Batanides, an officer he greatly admired and respected. He was known to Jean-Luc Picard by second-hand account, an old Academy classmate and friend of Batanides. By 2390, Vandermeer was the captain of the USS Ibn Majid, a heavy cruiser, with Cristóbal Rios as his first officer. (PIC: "The End is the Beginning", "Broken Pieces").
In that year, while patrolling the Vayt sector, the Ibn Majid encountered a small ship of unknown origin, and beamed aboard its two passengers, Beautiful Flower and Jana. Vandermeer received a "black flag directive" from Commodore Oh of Starfleet Security, which ordered him to kill the two beings, otherwise, Starfleet would destroy the Ibn Majid with all hands. Vandermeer murdered both of them with his phaser, and when Rios confronted him, he used the phaser to shoot himself in the head through the mouth. (PIC: "Broken Pieces")
Recalling Vandermeer's death, Rios later stated that he saw "[his] blood and brains splattered all over a bulkhead." (PIC: "The End is the Beginning")
In 2399, Rios learned that Beautiful Flower and Jana were androids. In conversation with Picard, Rios reasoned that Vandermeer must have been informed of their nature when he was given the directive, and believed that the captain had initially convinced himself that he could live with his actions as the pair were not organics. Captain Vandermeer appeared only in a photograph, portrayed by Vincent Teixeira, in "Broken Pieces". Teixeira received no on-screen credit for his appearance.
