Jiu Jitsu or any martial art is a challenge. Okay, it’s hard. On most days, I’m just so mentally drained that I’m too exhausted to train. At the gym, there are rounds I’ll avoid because I hate getting crushed by that certain person. Not to mention the anxiety and nerves when I compete. While these things are a harsh reality, they’re also what makes it so amazing. Without struggle, there can be no success. This past Saturday wasn’t a challenge, I wasn’t drained, and I wasn’t nervous.  But I wasn’t confident, and I performed horribly, struggled at takedowns, and was mounted easily. With my daughters cheering in the background, “Go, Mommy!”, I was choked and submitted. This loss forced me to look at my training or lack of, more honestly. It exposed my weaknesses and it displayed what I don’t do well so I can improve. Those suffering every day from cancer and other illnesses don’t have the ability to even move forward or “bounce back”. So despite my defeat, my daughters and I are honored to have fundraised and participated on the mats in Tap Cancer Out. I want to thank my friends and colleagues for your generous donations - I am beyond grateful for your kindness and support.  Your participation allows us to continue our fight for those in the fight of their lives.  I am bruised and broken, but I’ll be back. ❤️ https://lnkd.in/gcQ5RgmC

Congrats Ro Nieveras Lujan! Loss or not, it takes so much courage to step into the ring and compete in a combat sport - and to your point, the real reward is the experienced gained from it (at least at our level) 🙂 I think of the “Man in the Arena” quote by Teddy Roosevelt before every comp to remind myself of that!

Ro Nieveras Lujan This is amazing and what a wonderful cause. Also, your 'defeat' was a victory - we humans can't outrun nature and life's ups and downs, but we have one super power: to keep going and keep fighting. That's the great lesson of the Martial Arts. Well done!!!

This is the content I want to see on LinkedIn! There is a deeply honest way in which you understand parts of yourself when you compete in something as vulnerable as BJJ. Big congrats for putting yourself to the test. Onwards and upwards!
