In 1991, the highest-grossing video game worldwide was Capcom's arcade fighting game Street Fighter II. It grossed over $1 billion in arcades worldwide that year, beginning an arcade renaissance.

In the home market, the year's best-selling system was Nintendo's Game Boy for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, the year's best-selling home video game was the Sega Mega Drive title Sonic the Hedgehog, the first time a Sega console title became the worldwide annual best-selling home video game. Sonic the Hedgehog was also the year's top video game rental in the United States,

Top game rentals in the United States[]

Blockbuster Video, an American chain of video rental shops, reported to GamePro that Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis was the chain's highest-renting video game in 1991. Blockbuster also released a list of the top 10 highest-renting Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) titles of the year.[67]
