A tracking device or monitoring device was a form of tracking technology or other object that permitted the changing location of vehicles and individuals to be determined and monitored.
In 2263, after learning that Spock had given Nyota Uhura an amulet made out of vokaya, Leonard McCoy expressed surprise over the fact that Spock had given his girlfriend what was essentially a tracking device, something that Spock assured the doctor was not his intention. (Star Trek Beyond)
A viridium patch was a small device which could be attached to clothing and used for tracking purposes. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) A viridium tracker was an isotope that, if chewed and absorbed into the bloodstream by a person, allowed them to be tracked over long distances. While imprisoned at the Romulan prison camp on Carraya IV in 2369, Worf was implanted with a small boridium pellet placed under his skin, the energy signature from which could be used to track Worf's movements. Later, Ba'el offered to remove the tracking device from Worf to allow him to escape the camp, rather than face his execution, but Worf declined. (TNG: "Birthright, Part II")
In 2371, Chief Miles O'Brien planted a transponder on a Flaxian ship that visited Deep Space 9 to be used as a tracking device. The device was detectable within a range of a half-light year, however, the ship was destroyed before it could be put to use. (DS9: "Improbable Cause")
