Background information[]

  • Published by Pocket Books under its "Wallaby Books" imprint, the spiralbound desk calendar was released as part of their print publications line-up, intended to coincide as a promotional tie-in with the premiere of The Motion Picture on 7 December 1979. (Playboy magazine, January 1980, p. 310) However, due to the film's mixed reception, only about half of the planned titles, including this one, were ultimately released. Still, the Date Book was the first, and for decades the only one, of its kind for the Star Trek franchise as such.
  • Each week page was faced by a page, featuring a full-page publicity still stemming from the film, most of them originally intended to serve as lobby cards. While the majority of these were black and white stills, there was at least one full color publicity still featured for each month. A portion of this imagery was rarely, if at all, seen afterwards elsewhere. [1]
