Self-preservation was the act of an individual or group preserving itself from danger, injury, or death.
In 2266, the Human crew aboard the USS Enterprise destroyed an alien cube out of self-preservation, when the device emitted a radiation harmful to the species as the starship attempted moving away from it. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
