Robert "Bob" Carmichael was the second unit director on Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Among his tasks was directing the film's El Capitan mountain climbing sequence.

In addition to directing, Carmichael is also a professional cameraman. He has directed and photographed many commercials, including some for such companies and products as Kelloggs' Frosted Flakes, Burger King, Busch Gardens, Sprite, Ford, Cadillac, and Walt Disney World. Carmichael earned an Academy Award nomination as one of the producers of the 1980 short film Fall Line. He also directed and photographed the film.

Besides Star Trek V, Carmichael's other feature film work includes second unit direction and camera work on the films Navy Seals (1990, featuring Cyril O'Reilly and Titus Welliver, with cinematography by John A. Alonzo) and Queens Logic (1991, featuring Camille Saviola) and such television shows as Baywatch He was also a camera operator the films This Is Spinal Tap (1984, starring Ed Begley, Jr. and Michael McKean and co-written by McKean) and Paramount's The Hunt for Red October (1990, featuring Gates McFadden, Timothy Carhart and Boris Krutonog) and was director of photography on a number of projects, including the 1992 TV movie Double Jeopardy and the second unit of The First Wives Club (1996).
