The first grade reader was found in the USS Enterprise ship's library designed to teach young children to read at the first grade level.

In 2267, during an attempt to reeducate Uhura after she had her memory erased by the Nomad space probe, Christine Chapel helped the lieutenant sound out words in the first grade reader. Uhura, however, had some difficulty with the text and began speaking what she read in Swahili rather than in English, but eventually she read it correctly, earning a sisterly hug from Chapel. A fifth grade reader was an instructional book for students at the fifth grade level.
