A reader was educational book or tape designed to teach children how to read.

First grade[]

The first grade reader was found in the USS Enterprise ship's library designed to teach young children to read at the first grade level.

In 2267, during an attempt to reeducate Uhura after she had her memory erased by the Nomad space probe, Christine Chapel helped the lieutenant sound out words in the first grade reader. Uhura, however, had some difficulty with the text and began speaking what she read in Swahili rather than in English, but eventually she read it correctly, earning a sisterly hug from Chapel. Fifth grade[]

A fifth grade reader was an instructional book for students at the fifth grade level.

While recording his captain's log in 2368, Jean-Luc Picard recalled reading of the ancient Bajoran civilizations in his fifth grade reader. (TNG: "Ensign Ro")
